We visited too late to go into the central section so I don't know how much it costs or what that is like but the surrounds themselves are well worth visiting.Free parking, free entry to the majority of the site, well maintained grounds with incredible views and better earthworks. Hugely impressive for anyone even vaguely interested in history or just wanting a short walk with lovely views... must be one of the top free attractions in the country.
There is so much history in Old Sarum and this is a must see if you are in Salisbury to put all the history of the area in context.
Enjoyed the visit with our guided group, but would probably not have bothered otherwise as there is not much to see anymore and there is a charge to go in and see the ruins. The shop was very small but well stocked.
I go here to walk my dog, it's a good flat circular walk from the car park, and dogs are welcome in the outer bailey, ie the bit that you don't have to pay to get in. I like their website too, it says dogs are welcome in the outer bailey, if you don't like dogs, avoid the outer bailey Best visited on a clear sunny day, the views from here go for miles, and there's a brilliant view of the cathedral. It's somewhat exposed, so hard going on a very windy day. Please be aware that it's just ruins, don't expect to see a castle, more the foundations of one, with a lot of historical interest. For folks wanting a longer walk, there is a footpath that goes right around the outer parts, in amongst the grazing sheep. I've not been into the inner bailey (the bit that you pay for) since I was at school, so have no current idea what it's oike.
Walked around the hill for about two hours and explored the ruins. Very nice spot on a sunny day. Very enjoyable and interesting.
We visited Old Sarum on a bitterly cold day in early February so didn't spend as long there as we would have on a warmer day. Quite a lot of old walls and ruins to see and walk around. I was truly amazed at how large the site was. It was easy for me to imagine the buildings and hustle and bustle that would have been medieval life in the fortified town. Managed by English Heritage there is an entry fee but it was quite reasonable and as a 60+ I benefit from a reduced entry charge - carry a copy of your passport if this applies to you.
Old Sarum is a must see for visitors and locals alike. The site is easy to find and has good access. Once inside the outer ring you can choose to walk around the outside (seeing the cathedral ruins) or to venture into the inner ring where the settlement was. Either way youc an enjoy the great views and a lovely walk. Dogs are also welcome!
This is everything you'd expect from an old ruin. You can walk pretty much anywhere you'd like, get the feel for how the place used to function. Good view of the surrounding area, punctuated by the sounds of the Royal Artillery at Larkhill. They sell a guide which we didn't buy, so this complaint is perhaps moot. There wasn't much in the way of a history lesson, just enough to make one want to know more. I left with a lot of questions unanswered.
It's windswept and bleak but really interesting. The views are stunning. Take care with the paths as they are slippy.
Despite having lived locally for years, we visited this for the first time today. The site is very easy to access and it's easy to imagine how the castle would have been or to walk around the old moat. A word of warning, it is very exposed and can be very cold and windy!
