This is the only museum that provides the beinan culture heritage on the island. The exhibition is very informative. If you purchase the museum ticket, you also get free access to the beinan culture park. We also enjoyed the exhibition of the scientific archaeology, very interesting. It talks about all the different method to help the archaeologist to identify the remains/ findings. Highly recommend it!
We hich-hiked to the museum and spent a very interesting afternoon learning a lot of things about the beautiful island of Taiwan. My favorite part was about the aboriginal tribes. At the end of the visit we watched the nice fountain show. It's for sure a very worth visit if you are in Taitung.
While trying to fill our day in Taitung since we discovered that we couldn't swim at any beach there, we saw the sign and decided to visit the museum. We were quite surprised to find a very modern building with a really interesting way to present all the artifacts, and English translation to almost all of the exhibits. It explains the evolution of nature and humans and also gives us some food for thought with questions like "what do you want for the world"? or "how can we solve our problems?"With 80$NTD (if you are part of a group of 10, is 60$NTD) you can spent almost 2 - 3 interesting and very educating hours in a very modern environment with a total respect to the visitor.
Only planned to spend a couple of hours, and ended up feeling like we missed a lot after six, but we had to get on the road to our next hotel. Fortunately there was a restaurant, so didn't have to leave. Sufficient information in English so we learned so much about the "prehistoric" that's pre-Chinese cultures. Really interesting, and hope we can get back to visit and complete our visit again sometime in the near future.Oh, the best was that we had the museum almost to ourselves. Fortunately no hoards of school kids as we might have expected. Not sure how we managed that on a Friday, but it was great.
Very informative museum. A lot of work has gone into the collection of artifacts and especially in the displays. The curator deserves a lot of credit for the work done. As a non-Chinese speaker, the English displays were also excellent and, unlike a lot of museums around the island, devoid of any grammatical or spelling errors. As one reviewer mentioned earlier, it was a big surprise to see such an expansive and professional museum in a fairly remote place. I would definitely recommend a visit.
Taitung is kind of a remote area to find a world class museum of this quality so please do visit it if you get a chance. The building was designed by Michael Graves and is massive! Only opened about 10 years ago and the the exhibitions are really excellent with very good English language labels. Tricky to get to by public transport so it is best visited by car or as part of a tour.
