Not too far out of Townsville, and gives amazing views of the city and surrounding flats. Takes maybe 30 minutes to get there off the ring road.
A small unsigned parking area on the side of a hill does indeed provide scenic views towards Townsville, but it is hardly worth the effort to make a special trip. The view obtained from the more central Castle Hill is much nicer and encompassing. Also, don't believe everything you see, as the photo seen here on Trip Advisor is not at all what you can expect to see. This lookout provides at best a glimpse of the distant ocean, being that it is far removed from the coast.
There are some really beautiful views over Townsville and toward Magnetic Island from Herveys Range. Take the camera and get yourself some great shots. Some of the landscape reminded me of Werribee Gorge in Victoria, though other parts were very dry. If you've got a 4x4 make sure you venture off road, but be very careful - we got stuck in a ditch in 33 degrees and had to haul rocks to get ourselves out.Photos taken 28/12/13 on an Olympus OM-D.
This lookout provides an absolutely stunning view down the valley and towards the ocean. Just down the road from Hervey's Range Tea Rooms it's well worth a visit.
Just near the tea rooms, it's a great lookout to stop at for a wide view across Townsville. No ameneties, but off the road enough to park the car and have a walk around.
We always pull over for a look on the way back from the summit. In the dry months the air can be a little hazy, but after rain it is fantastic. There is a heritage tea shop on the right at the top of the range that is worth a visit. Takes about 20 minutes to get to the lookout from the Willows Shopping Centre.
What an amazing view and why not do the whole Hervey Range Highway experience from Townsville. Just up the road from the lookout is the Hervey Range Heritage Tea Rooms and what a look back in time they are as the present building was the original hotel used by Cob and Co Coaches in the late 1800's, and the experience is rustic and rural, the coffee and food good. The road heads further 90 kilometres west and joins up with the Gregory Development Road. Head 100 klm south and it gives you an interesting trip to Charters Towers with a camping and picnic area and rest area at Fletchers Creek about half way. You can then retury to Townsville via the Flinders Hidhway.
A nice drive from Townsville. Great view and not far from the historic Heritage Hervey's Range Tearooms.
Take your time a go. There is an awesome restaurant nearby too.
