My wife and I booked the Round the Bend tour. It was a six hour Jeep ride through Big Bend National park, complete with a supplied lunch. Our guide knew her geology, plant life and animals masterfully. But most memorable was her freindly demeanor and accommodating attitude. Had a great time. The only thing I would change would be to opted for an enclosed vehicle. The Jeep offers an open viewing for pictures but after six hours of bouncing around and the desert dust I would go enclosed.
We spent 3 nights at the Far Flung Outdoor Center in November of 2014. This is truly the best place to stay in Terlingua. The casitas were wonderful and well laid out. We were extremely surprised by all the little things that they had thought about. It had rained the day of our arrival and it was quite muddy - they took the time to cover the mud with gravel in order to make it easier to get around the property. We trailered a motorcycle for our trip to Big Bend and they were very accommodating by letting us park at the back of the parking lot which made it easy for us to get the motorcycle in and out of the trailer. There aren't many great restaurants in the area so be sure to check out the great little store on FM118 (Cottonwood Market). They even had gluten free items! There were grills available at the Far Flung Outdoor Center which was just perfect as we were able to pick up some steaks and grill out 2 of the nights we were there. You will not regret staying here!
We've traveled all over and this is one of the cleanest best ran places anywhere! We look forward to numerous visits in the future! We love this place!!
...and Far Flung Adventures will take you there. It's tons of fun riding in the custom made jeeps, touring the countryside.
Big Bend is one of the most beautiful, rugged, unique and remote places I have ever been and due to this fact, I wanted to visit it through a company that was well respected in the region - FAR FLUNG.I could not have been more impressed with the hospitality, friendliness, and level of service that they provided me and my group of 5 friends. We stayed one night in Casita 11 and 12 before our 3 day/2 night Santa Elena rafting trip. The Casitas were more than enough - comfortable, VERY CLEAN, perfect amount of space for 2-4 adults in each Casita and a nice porch. The grounds have bbq grills, a horseshoe pit and a sweet fire pit for those cold evenings. The sheets alone in those Casitas are reason enough to go back.Far Flung outfitted our group with quality gear and shuttle service to the put-in. We had pre-arranged a pick up at the take out after we finished Santa Elena Canyon for 1pm. Our group actually finished early but our shuttle driver was right on time and arrived 5 minutes before we had asked to be picked up. William, the shuttle driver and guide, is a wealth of knowledge and quite the character.Overall, I would recommend Far Flung (Greg, Valynda, Randy, William) to anyone who wants a special company to make their special visit to Big Bend even more memorable.Thank you Far Flung. We will be back for more
I couldn't have asked for more...a trip to Big Bend to hike in the autumn. Of course, the weather was out of our control and we spent most of the time in clouds and drizzle, but the Far Flung guides were excellent in all aspects of this trip that could be 'managed.' Adana, Thomas, and Dean all possess good people skills and lots of energy and patience. It was clear they had our pleasure and safety topmost in their minds, always maintaining a sense of humor throughout in spite of having to be quick on their feet when the threats of flash floods became a strong possibility and new options had to be arranged. In addition to hiking, we visited visitor centers at Big Bend National Park and Terlingua, Texas, a most fascinating ghost town. Our far-well dinner at the outdoor center was not only delicious, but full of camaraderie that was possible in large part to Far Flung's expertise and wonderful staff. I could say so much more, all positive, but frankly, I am tired of typing. I plan on using this company to float the Rio Grande with my husband and perhaps our grandchildren in the future.
Same great quality and friendly staff. The casitas are just like new and we slept soundly. We are looking forward to our next stay.
My wife and I have done two trips with Far Flung (one in 2010 and the other in 2014). In 2010, the water was high enough that we went through Santa Elena Canyon. In 2014, we went to an area south of the national park. You can count on Far Flung to have your safety and enjoyment as their most important measures. Both trips were excellent! We were impressed with how the guides did all the cooking and clean up. We both had been single parents who were used to doing most of the work when camping so we know it wasn't easy for the guides, but it was very easy for us.
We had originally booked and paid for a river tour with Far Flung. However, the weather was cold and windy on the afternoon we were suppose to go -- the river was the last place we wanted to be. We called and asked if we could change to a jeep tour; while they couldn't accommodate us until the next day, it was nice of them to be flexible to meet our needs. The jeep tour the next day was interesting and informative -- we visited an old ghost town.
Expensive but well worth it. We took the Jeep (although it turned out to be a Hummer because the weather was so cold that morning) tour in the desert with Chris. He explained the landscape, plants, history of the area, what it is like to live in the area...so much that helped us understand our surroundings. On another day, we took the canoe trip down the Rio Grande with Thomas...another great outing. Thomas was also quite knowledgeable and entertaining.Far Flung provided good quality outings. I highly recommend them.
