It is small but very nice surprise. People are friendly and you see many (and I mean many) different animals all over the place waiting for a peace of fish to step in their way. Several species of birds and sea lions make the place (not the cleanest) a feast of energy even in a rainy day.
Great place to buy fish and seafood, but also fruits and vegetables. It's a great place to know more about Valdivian culture. Photographers welcomed. You can see sea lions, pelicans and other birds.
but quite small. What makes this place particular is that, alt least in genuary, sea lions climb up the fences protecting the market and lay there begging for fish leftovers that sellers throw them every now and then. It' s a good occasion for taking great pictures
The fish market is worth visiting if you're interested in seeing sea lions and birds, especially pelicans. The sea lions come to the market to eat the left overs.
During the day you can buy fruit and fish, ceviche and watch the sea lions. At night there are souvenir and clothing vendors.
Selling fresh produces for the land and sea. Fish and shellfish very fresh and they deliver it to your wishes. Fillet, Steaks or what ever you desire. Vegetables also great and not forgetting the cheese. A bit expensive but very interesting with the Sea lions and pelicans.
The fish market is fascinating but undoubtedly the highlight are the huge sea lions. They come up to feed of scraps and waste from fish market -best method of recycling I have seen in a while. The traders will feed them so you can get a great close up picture (my wife had to be warned as she was taking a picture and one appeared behind her!) The fish market is one side and the other fruit and vegetable. Very lively and definitely worth a visit
Nice little open market with a good selection of fresh local produce and seafood, open during the earlier hours of the day. There is a great deal of resident wildlife (sea lions, sea birds) nearby that eat the scraps thrown away and offer great picture potential. Nearby are many shops and restaurants that offer locally brewed German style beers. At night the market transforms into a night market with vendors selling other non food related fare (gourd mate cups, woodwork, jewellery, etc.). Visitors to Valdivia should visit at least once and enjoy this big feature of local life.
Great little fish market, watch the fish sellers and sea lions interact and get yourself some great bargains then go eat awesome fish and chips in the market opposite with a giant flagon of German beer. Great lunch and afternoon.
We visited here recently while attending a conference in Valdivia and it was one of the highlights of our trip. The market itself is not especially large, but it is packed with fish, seafood and produce. We ate some great cherimoya there, were schooled on the various fish (take special notice of the conger eels, known as 'congrio'), clams, mussels and tunicates ('piure'). The river side of the market is also a great place to see vultures, cormorants, gulls and sea lions. In fact, the largest bull sea lions we saw on this trip were at the market. I highly recommend going to the market and taking one of the many river cruises from here to see some of the wildlife in the area.
