We found it hard to actually locate some parking to see the fort, required some driving around but it was worth it. The fort was open to walk around but the buildings were locked. I think it would be great to be there on a day the buildings are open. We were unable to locate any maps so we just wandered aimlessly and it was a great way to spend an afternoon on a nice fall day. There was a lot of landscaping but it was past peak-I think it would be beautiful when the flowers are in bloom but we did enjoy some nice fall color. The bathrooms were locked, unfortunately I wish we would have had found a map somewhere that showed the entire park system in advance.
We spent some time on Father's Day biking the Maumee pathway. The path was very clean and even on one part where a mudslide took place it was scraped away. Had a stinky area but this is the real world with rotting things and you bike past a water treatment plant as well? We all enjoyed our time and spotted plenty of mulberry trees along the way. There was a lot of cottonwood floating around and it made a mystical white fluff pathway to ride through in certain parts. Make sure you have water it is 90' here all week.
Great River Greenway & lots of other choices throughout town! We love biking and walking on these trails and look forward to more completions of the proposed master plan!
Folks of Fort Wayne I am sure know how lucky they are to have such safe and gorgeous trails. I did the complete ST. Mary's trail on bike and it was one of my highlights for the week I stayed in FT. Wayne. Beautiful!
My wife and I, avid cyclers, decided to spend a weekend trying out most of this trail system and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We stayed on the west side and went clear to the east side taking several of the off shoots just to explore. The days were just beautiful weather wise and the trails were all paved which made it easy on us. The west side goes through a wetlands area and has been left as nature intended with all its wild life. I highly recommend these trails for walkers and bikers as well.
Over the last few years I have biked every mile of trails that Fort Wayne has put together. These trails are paved and well maintained. Plenty of nature to look at with ample places to get off the trail and get something to eat or drink. Fort Wayne should be very proud of the River Greenway.
Fort Wayne should be very proud of their trail system. As avid travelers we look for a good trail system for walking & bicycling. This trail system is one of the best we've found in our travels.
I have lived in 3 places in 2 different states in 7 years. All have had some type of trail system, and Fort Wayne's are by far the best! Several different paved sections all over the city. My family has really been enjoying them :) If you live in Fort Wayne and haven't checked them out, you should!
The River Greenway system of walking-biking trails in and around Fort Wayne-New Haven is expanding every year. They are well maintained and offer scenic views along the three rivers, as well as historical places downtown. The Old Fort near headwaters is a must stop on your journey.
