We visited the Old Cowtown Museum during Christmas break. The weather was cold, so there weren't any wagon rides or shootouts or period characters working. But, I was impressed that almost every structure is open so you can go inside and really see how things were. They were heated, too. The benefit of going during the off season was having the place nearly all to ourselves, so we could play school in the one room school house, imagine church service in the old church, pretend to have a doctor's appointment in the old pharmacy, dance in the dance hall without being embarrassed, etc...( we have a 4 and 8 year old!). I would like to visit when everything is up and running during the summer, but it was a great way to spend a couple of hours even in the winter!
This is a museum the whole family can enjoy...Excellent example of 1800's living. Even when they aren't putting on live demonstrations at the dance hall, blacksmith's, gun fighters, etc., the property is full of different buildings with many displays. The live demonstrations during special events, such as Christmas, summer months, etc. are not to be missed, but don't miss this experience anytime you are in the area.
Cowtown is so close to the original cowtown. Some of the original buildings are artifacts are included. It gives you a feel of the 19th century.
This is always an educational experience for kids (and even yourself). There are many historical buildings (a little smaller than I remember, but may because of the "largeness as a kid" syndrome). If visiting for the Halloween event, I would suggest visiting early so that the kids get a history education. Then, take the kids through the grounds again, and they will have a better understanding and get some candy! There are no tours of the buildings during the Halloween event and most of the places are off-limits. It is a little over-priced, but I am interested in supporting the community. This is a great environment for families and young children. Also, I have actually guided a wheelchair client through Cowtown, so it is definitely wheelchair accessible.
Absoluty loved this historic place, Every there was in full costume and knowledgeable of there area...We got to make butter, print off a wanted poster, sit in stage coach, watch a shoot out at High noon of course, Lots of homemade crafts, jellies, cookies ect...A great time was had by my father, myself, my children and grandchildren.
If you are a cowboy or cowgirl lover you will enjoy visiting Old Cowtown Museum. It is like a glimpse of what the old west was like in the 1860's. Complete with a saloon, school, and general store, you can see the lifestyle, costumes and culture of this era. Great in the summer when they have entertainment and activities going on through out the daytime and evening hours!
Truly get the feel of what life was like back in the 1800s awesome staff very helpful such a must see tourist spot if visiting wichita
Great place to take the family. In season has lots of authentic exhibits(blacksmith, quilters, shootout etc). Right around the bend from Riverside Park, great place to have a picnic. Lots of equipment for kids to play on, site of the old zoo, still has a terrarium with lots of native small animals on view. All in all a great way to show the kids how it really used to be and have fun at the same time.
This is such a refreshing place for me to go. Love to experience when life was less complicated. Kudos to the rugged Men and Women that was able to Live back in the day, before AC, running water etc. There is a large assortment of original buildings. There are a lot of volunteers/employees that help make the experience. You may see a carpenter, someone baking, ladies and children sewing projects. There are gun fights, wagon rides, and in the saloon you can get a hotdog meal complete with delicious Sarsaparilla, yummy! There is also a melodrama you can enjoy. Trick or treating is fun, and Christmas, so beautiful! Take a step back in time and enjoy this piece of history.
What is there not to say about this place..Just a great place to learn some history about how things were done back in the 1800s The employees are very knowledgeable and have a great time. Definitely coming back again
