My husband and I love visiting this winery. It's adorable with a ghost story and cemetary as well as very cute barns. The wine is great too- some of our fave bottles.
The winery, buildings and grounds are not to be missed. The owners, Richard and Vida are welcoming and shared some of the interesting history as well as the unique characteristics of their winery. One can even enjoy a glass of their wine (they are very good) in the barn with a beautiful view of the lake across the road. They also host fun events at the winery and we've enjoyed a couple of concerts in the barn along with a BBQ and of course, their wines. Earlier this summer, a group of us rented their Farmhouse for a weekend and it was terrific. We typically stay at the various inns (which are also very good), however renting the Farmhouse at the winery was quite special. The farmhouse is very spacious (5 bedrooms) and it had everything we needed for a great weekend. The kitchen was well stocked and the large dining room was great to spend time around the table over meals. The rental included time with Vida who is also the winemaker and we really enjoyed our time with her as well as the tastings. Richard writes an email newsletter, which we've enjoyed as it's all about the wine, events and the County. I think there would be info on the winery website about the rental and the newsletter.
Four of us did the groupon tasting and tour. It was fantastic. Richard has a gift of description for wine tasting and his stories are enlightening. Bought 9 bottles to take home. Wine is so good. Very down to earth winery. A refreshing change from Niagara Falls
I bring friends to tour the County several times a summer. Chadseys is the most photogenic location. It has so much charm and character from the old cemetery, barn with a view of Lake Ontario and the fabulous wine tasting building with a patio overlooking the vineyard. The staff is really great at explaining the different wines. This is a must stop on any tour.
Chadseys was recommended to us by our Innkeeper - and we were not disappointed. The winery wraps around an ancient cemetery - stones date back to the early 1800's (pre-Confederation). The winetasting experience occcurs within an incredible brick building - what a beauty. Good wine, too, reasonably priced. We bought the 2013 VQA "White Horse" white wine to try with cedar planked salmon at home. I'd take friends back there.
My wife and I visited this Winery after visiting about 7 others. It was our favorite, by far. The wine is very good. We plan on making it our "Go To" winery when we visit in the future.
Not the first winery in PEC but the first to plant vinifera varieties and the first to work out how to stop them being killed by the cold in winter (bury them !) . Proper serious Germanic / alsacian style wines much appreciated by us - plus a very interesting super-dry chenin blanc- drier than I've ever had in Vouvray - and an usual buttery chardonnay; steel fermented but noble-rot afflicted. The owner - winemaker Richard Johnston stopped mowing and ambled along and hosted an impromptu and enlightening tasting for just the 2 of us. The weather was gorgeous which helps of course. And as others have said, the setting is idyllic and one of the few PEC vineyards where the lake is visible. The business is for sale if anyone is interested.....
When ever we are in the County we always make a point of stopping to see the folks at By Chadsey's Cairn. We love bringing friends to introduce them to the County and By Chadsey's is a 'must do'. Besides loving the wine, the charm of the location, the great story of the property and the welcome by both RIchard and VIta makes this stopping point on our journey through the County a highlight everytiime, no matter what the season.
Chadsey's is a stop we have made both times being in Prince Edward County. It is a great and charming winery with some excellent wines. Service has always been very good with knowledgable staff. We always grab a few bottles to bring back to share with other wine enthusiasts. A must see when going through PEC.
Chadsey's Cairns is a unique stop on any county wine tour. The property is uniquely welcoming and richard is always on hand to pour a glass of vida's finely crafted work and tell the stories that go along with it. They are passionate about their work and it is a delight to share the results of their labours. Take time to peer in the barn, stroll through time in the cemetery, and admire the view of the lake. If the timing is right, volunteer to pick and you will be thoroughly entertained by the experience
