The man who runs the Gaol was happy to have a chat encouraged us to dress up, take photos and touch stuff. Not like a usual museum type place, we were able to go into cells and take photos and wander around. The entrance price was not over the top. We spent a great hour there.Y
Wentworth goal and museum is about a half hour drive from Mildura. There is great history here mainly for the older generations or adults. I think children would find it a little boring and instead of taking at least an hour to view with children you would be out in no time. Cost $12.00 for adults. If you want to know the history of the gaol I highly recommend visiting.
Some interesting facts and examples of history of the district. The gaol has an interesting past in being not only a gaol but also a school during its time.
The displays in the gaoler's' residence were interesting and looking at the conditions prisoners endured provided an insight of days gone by.
We found that this was a very interesting place to visit but it would not be on our list of accommodation places to stay. It is amazing what prisioners in the early days had to put up with. Much better to stay on the straight and narrow. Well worth a visit.
was a great way to learn the history behind the gaol and the past inmates there. Lots of history to learn. Was more set up for an experience of adults. Kids were really bored. And unless you were standing inside the gaol there wasnt alot of seating or shade for "visitors".
The Gaol is very well preserved and offers a great visit. A great gift shop and if your into photography, you will get some great photos
I found the gaol really interesting and enjoyed reading the stories in the display although the print was pretty small for seniors like myself :-) Wouldn't be too expensive to update some of the information and reprint it. Certainly worth a look if you are in the area and have an interest in history. Personally I find gaol tours anywhere a bit depressing considering the conditions that were endured. I am also not very comfortable with indigenous artifacts being housed here.
this place was such a good place to go back in time and see what these poor men went through thanks for the meomries
There's not a massive amount of things to do in Wentworth so I guess the gaol is worth a look. The building structure itself is in quite good nick but not really refurbished. I would have thought that the emphasis would be to provide local information and some of the stories given are interesting. But really - what has Port Arthur got to do with Wentworth and why is a Tasmanian police uniform on show? Totally inappropriate. The entrance area is a glorified junk shop but you can ignore that (and the questionable souvenirs!) I just think it's a shame that there hasn't been more funding and museum expertise available for this site.
