It was our first visit to Mission Hill Estate and it reminded us of the wineries in France with the manicured lawns and the architecture, sprinkled with sculptures in all corners of the property. We'd heard a lot about this place and went to discover it for ourselves. For photography, it was wonderful but when we walked into the tasting room from the courtyard we were met with opulence and cold servers standing around in black and white attire looking very officious and unapproachable. Right away the feeling of not being welcome was there. There were about eight personnel around and maybe half a dozen people (off season - mid October) visitor/tourists like ourselves. Not one person came up to us to ask if we needed help, would like to taste wine, or take a tour. After about ten minutes we left. It was just not a friendly atmosphere. We'd just come from several other smaller wineries where we were met with open arms as soon as we walked in, like we were long lost family. It's worth the time to tour the grounds but if you're really not keen on being ignored, don't bother the staff. We've toured wineries in France and this one reminds us of some of them but the French were more friendly. Maybe because the Okanagan Wine Festival was just over the workers were just plain tired of being "up" all the time for tourists. When we visit the Kelowna area again we won't be back to Mission Hills.
What a ripoff this place was. Yes, the scenery and lay-out of the estate are beautiful, but other than that..Staff is absolutely oblivious to guests needs, all they do is to basically make you taste their standard wine list and that's about it. Specific questions are not answered and you can wonder around the shop for half an hour without any staff addressing you. I wanted to buy 12 bottles of Icewine, but was not allowed to taste. Well, at 60$ a bottle that is ridiculous.
We have visited many wineries around the world and this place surprised me. It is so worth a visit if you are in the area of the Okanagan Valley, particularly Kelowna. It is an excellent place to relax and enjoy a bite and a drink. Very nice!
Art & excellent wines. Educational tours and exeptional privat tastings can be arranged. Tours are really recommended to understand whats Mission Hill all about.
Breathtaking site at the top of the hill by the lake, with the grapevines flowing downhill from there. Interesting architecture for the buildings and surrounding structures. The whole place has a very classy feeling to it. On to the wine tasting, I sampled their 3 premiums wines, for a $4 fee (free tasting on the regular wines). All 3 were OK, not bad, not great either. The reds were very tannic (as they should be given their young age), and fairly short in the mouth. The Cab based one was somewhat better than the Merlot based one (I forget their names), but neither one was worth the $60 price. In my mind they compare to $15-20 Argentinian or Chilean wines. The Chardonnay was also less than exceptional for the price.
My beautiful partner and I visited Mission Hill the week before Valentine's Day and we were pleasantly surprised to be welcomed to a special wine tasting and pairing to honour St. Valentine. The venue has superb views of the lake, classy settings for the wine tasting and an atmosphere that caters to couples. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at the tasting and I highly commend the staff serving us that day. This winery is a must stop on your wine tour of the Okanagan.
Good wine, beautiful ground with such artistry and aesthetics. The autumn colours simply added such beauty that is difficult to equal.
Beautiful winery to tour and do tastings! Friendly staff that are always interested in sharing their knowledge. Great experience!
