Located about 15 miles north of exit 255 it is well marked. If you like to take photos arrive about an hour before sunset. Walk out onto one of the fingers and watch the colors change. Then face the sun and watch the sunset and highlight the San Francisco Mountains. There are no trails so I advise being very careful and watch out for reptiles. There is graffiti covering all the structures but overlook it and enjoy the scenery. There are toilet facilities but I wouldn't go close as they appear very run down. Nice place to visit if you are passing it or staying in Winslow.
If you're on highway 87, it's worth the stop. Surprising topography. Pretty. But, there was a bunch of trash on the ground and graffiti on tthe buildings. Sad. Not worth jumping off the interstate.
I don't think most folks would drive far off the road to see this, though I might. It is exactly what it sounds like in a way -- a miniature painted desert and absolutely gorgeous. There is a picnic ground in somewhat unkempt condition that was being used for some kind of Navajo ceremonial when we were there. I have an attraction to such doings and an odd respect as well. There is a rim road for anyone with 4WD and some time on your hands, or a bit of walking around if you wish. The view will probably surprise you when you finally pull up.But there are lots of good reasons to head out this way, such as the Hopi Mesas and a good approach route to the incomparable WIndow Rock with nice scenery on the way. Combine them all and you have an afternoon you won't forget any time soon.
We visited the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest as a bit of a break in a long journey, but found it really fascinating and would like to have spent more time there. The colours of the desert become more intense as you drive from the interstate towards the Petrified Forest. The blue cliffs look amazing - definitely worth a visit.
Stuck in Winslow Arizona due to a wind, rain, dust storm, we headed out the next day to see this County park. Even though the directions were thorough, we thought it would be a wash until we were right up to the rim.....what a gorgeous pleasant surprise!!!This is a little known park, we did not see it on any website! Found it on our GPS! We watched as the sun and clouds changed the colours of the small canyon, absolutley beautiful!!
Очень интересное место, реально как раскрашенная пустыня. Конечно краски блеклые, но это же природные краски и все таки пустыня
When im headed towards to Winslow Az i love to stop by here just to enjoy the view espeically when the sun just about to set its breath taking. Great things about Arizona is the killer sun sets :) one stop you must go before entering Winslow.
This is called the Little Painted Desert County Park. It is free and is located about 15 miles north of Winslow, just off of highway 87. The best time to visit would be at sunset. There were a few covered picnic tables & grills, along with a bathroom.
This park was absolutely beautiful! It's a 28 mile road through the Little Painted Desert and The Petrified Forest. Both are stunning. There are a few little trails off the road where you can stop and hike a bit, but none are strenuous. I went close to sunset and had some amazing views!
My brother took me to see the sunset it was gorgeous and colorful with perfect lighting. I'd go agian for pics.
