Easy walk from the city center with nice views over the beagle channel and the glacier. The way is good marked and easy to find.
Had the fortune of having the Glacier view from my hotel, and luckier even to wake up one morning to see it snowed. The day before we had gone trekking to the base of the Glacier, was a 45 minute walk, we took the road that goes on the side of a stream, which was very beautiful. Totally recommend going there.
That was one of my favorite things to see in Ushuaia! The mountain is beautiful! But maybe that is because I'm from a country where there are not so many mountians and almost no snow. Maybe if you are from a mountain region, the Martial Glaciar wont amaze you that much. That is because, when some one imagines a glaciar, most otf the time, the person will imagine something like Perito moreno. But that is not the same kind of glaciar. For me it looked more like an avarage snow montain... what was, for me, an amazing place to be!It is quite easy to go there. You can go walking from the city, or take a taxi that will be quite cheap. The entrance to the park is free.
The glacier itself is nothing spectacular, but the views of Ushuaia from the top are well-worth the hike! An easy taxi-ride out of town and, atleast during the busy season, there were plenty of taxis waiting for us when we were done!
Took taxi to bottom of old ski hill and then a three hour stroll to top of the trail. We had a beautiful warm day with nice view of town and port. We had only one day and had several options available, but we thought the hike and view would be interesting. It gets steep towards end and the walk down was hard on my old knees, so a walking pole helped.
The glacier was very small and not particularly inspiring but the views from the top of the walk were lovely. A good intro to high places for kids. Take gear and push on up the glacier if able.
While I am sure it was a great glacier at some point in time, it is far from impressive today. However, the hike to the snow was enjoyable and the views on the way up are worthwhile. Bring gear for freak snow storms and cold but rest assured the weather will change within minutes.
If you have a couple of hours to burn it is worth the walk up. But it is definitely not the best walk around town, neither the best vieuw our glacier. Most of the walk up is along a road, but on the other hand you can start it right from town.
We started the hike from town, it was an easy walk along the road up to a forest where we took the side route. There was some uphill but not very difficult. Took about an hour from the town to the base of the trail, then there is a wide dirt road or a thin trail through the mountains. Do not worry about not being fit enough, it is uphill but not too steep and you see everyone walking it, from small children to older people. Once this trail is finished be sure to hike up to the top. It is signposted as difficult and taking an hour each way but my sister and I are not particularly fit and found it average only talking 40 mins. Once up take the route to the left where there's even more snow and less people! Highly reccomend!
Even during summer, is very windy. Bing a jacket. Take a cab until the Tea House, then you can walk until the top. It's well sinalized, don't need any guide. The view is really nice and you can see all the city. To come back, there will be some cabs waiting for everybody who went up. The cab to the city center costs about 80 pesos.
