It waa nice spot for a quick stop but did not photograph particularly well when we were there due to the haze.
This is at the end of the Island in the Sky road. Definitely worth the drive. The rim trail is well done and allows a stomach churning look down the cliff faces without any rails. Take some time and enjoy the trail and views.
Number one favorite thing we did at CanyonLands was the Grand View Point Trail: It is about a mile in so 2.0 miles round trip. Relatively easy. We did it was a ranger lead talk/walk and it was EXCELLENT. The talk walk out was 1.5 hours with lots of stops and very interesting topics. He will also answer any questions. You then walk back at your own pace. This was the highlight of the trip.
Arrived at Grand View Point in time for sunset. Just magnificent to see the sun setting on this massive canyonlands. Totally awesome.
When you think you've seen everything beautiful, you arrive here and it will take your breath away. Easy access
The trail is a must. The sights on route on spectacular and the views from the end of the trail are stunning. You can see the start of monument basin (that turns in to the valley) and the 360 panoramic is unforgettable.
Looks like Godzilla walked around here, from the overlook, it looks like his footprints. But okay, take your binoculars and look closely, the thin walls (of the "toes") look tall and fragile, that itself is amazing. I can see why they call this place Island in the Sky. Great place to close out the day with a sunset.
It really is spectacular when you consider the height of the canyons and the various levels down to the river. It really is quite different and spectacular scenery
So just be prepared that unless you are hiking this trail at a completely ungodly hour, you are going to be sharing the entire length with a lot of people! Then again, the same could be said of a lot of the trails in the Moab-area parks, so you're probably used to it if you've been wandering around. That said, it would take a crowd of truly epic size to deter me from wholeheartedly recommending that anybody and everybody hike this trail. It is at least partially-paved (they were working on that when I was there), so just about anyone can take in the views, and they are not to be missed! Seriously, if you can do only one trail at Island in the Sky, this is your trail!
A truly spectacular site at sunset - one that will stay with me forever. We want to come back and experience it for a longer period of time, and see it in more detail. Highly recommended.
