This place is a gem ! Operated as a non-profit, It maintains its original charm and character while embracing the present and helping to shape the future of theatre & stage play !
We saw an engrossing production of Dial M for Murder. The only downside, sitting in the balcony, was the limited leg room.
The Barn is surprisingly small when you walk into it but the talent is big! The casts are younger actors (mixed with a big name actor now and then who might be older) but very professional and committed. This is definitely on a higher scale than what you might be thinking is a local yocal theater troupe. Many of the performers come from top universities and the New York City area. It's a real treat to see shows here. My only complaint is that the lower seats on the side cannot see anything happening in the upper balconies. We saw Spamelot and this happened. I think our tickets were the same price as the best seats so perhaps there should be a compensation for the slightly obstructed view seats? Tickets aren't super cheap but it is worth supporting the work and efforts of this playhouse. They deserve it! Many of these actors could be somewhere else I suppose. New London is not necessarily near any large cities so they rely on devoted locals and tourists (like me) to help them continue. It seems like a very well run institution and their history goes way back. Black and white photos adorn the walls including the likes of Pippin and Godspell from the 1970's. Get there early as their parking lot fills up quickly with Seniors and then you have to park on the street. Enjoy!
Enjoyed this performance so much, I bought tickets for another show. Over th Pub in August. Seating is comfortable and great sound quality. As a senior, I would say this playhouse should be ticketed once each summer season. Well done
This little red barn from the outside is just a mystery inside what will they deliver next, this years cast is a great as all of the past. The playhouse will leave you laughing, crying and in love for more theater, we are truly blessed to have such entertainment and culture in new hampshire, The price of a ticket is fair and considered prices once you have experience a revelation of your senses. Make sure you buy a ticket for next years offering the due in fact sell out. Thank you to all the actor and actresses of the 2014 season. Till next spring
This play house is in a restored Red Barn. The seating is cramped but the atmosphere is wonderful. It was great to enjoy a wonderful play in such a historic place. We saw Dial M for Murder. The cast was excellent. You couldn't ask for a better experience. The smaller veneu was better then Broadway.
We have been attending the productions of this marvelous summer stock theater for over 30 years (The Playhouse is 82 seasons old!). This Thursday evening performance of Cole Porter's musical was exceptional in its musical performance, singing, acting, dancing, humor, staging, etc. The student summer interns were wonderful. It was also sold out! What a great tribute to this national treasure. We left our evening wanting more - we ALWAYS leave the Barn Playhouse wanting more - and so will you!
I have attended summer stock theater in many cities. These young kids are great. Fantastic dancing and singing. I saw "Damn Yankees" for the first time and really enjoyed it. Ticket prices are $34 or $40. If that price is a little too high for you then save your money and go. There are 4 other shows this summer. Most are quite well known. The seats were very comfortable. It is a real barn in the center of town. Because the building is so small, one can see well no matter what seat. We got tickets the last minute on a Tuesday. Call ahead is best. They rent pillows and sell snacks at intermission.
My wife and I were unfamiliar with this venue and our expectations were probably both pretty low. We are thrilled to say this was one of the best productions we've seen anywhere. We saw the last performance of "Spamalot", one of our favorites, and were totally blown away. There was not one weak link in the cast - each member gave their all in energy, creativity and performance. The venue itself is tiny, but extremely comfortable. The seating is excellent, the sound and lighting and props were impressive, the AC kept us cool on a sultry summer evening, and the staff was friendly. We left with smiles all around, singing some of the tunes and reciting some of the zany lines. We look forward to seeing other productions here in the future. It is well worth the trip.
This is a must for any visitors to the area as well as locals. The playhouse itself is small and intimate with not a bad seat in the house. Every year we try to attend at least one or two musicals and sit in the front row of the balcony. This year...Damn Yankees and Spamalot and Cinderella with our granddaughters coming up. We love the Barn. The cast is mostly new every year...young talent who give it their all in enthusiasm and professionalism. You can tell they love what they do. At the end of the show the entire cast waits outside the playhouse to meet and greet the audience. It's a chance to let each actor know how much you enjoy their performance. 5 stars aren't enough!
