This is a lovely place to visit. It's high up on mount Subasio. The walk through is well planned and quite beautiful. The cave where St. Francis prayed and lived is preserved there. You can actually stop and say a prayer in the very spot. There are benches and quiet areas for meditation and prayer. It's 4km up from Assisi. We took a taxi because it was a warm day. Many people walk up the winding road. I think next time I'd walk back to town but still taxi up.
We took a taxi up to this retreat which was so tranquil. In addition to the building which is fascinating, make sure that you press on to explore the open air 'chapels' in the surrounding forest - they were both remarkable and deserted. We walked back down (including 3 children under 10) in a little over one hour and whilst the first part is not the best on the road, the second part provided a beautiful walk through the countryside with great views, including of Rocco Maggiore.
The Franciscan spirit is up here; beside the Basilica if you want to feel the original franciscan spirit you must climb up to the Eremo
An amazing place in the middle of the forest, simplicity seemed everywhere and peace that fills our souls! just sit in the midst of the trees and enjoy the freedom, the peace and quietness of the place
Even other tuorists here show respect, keep quiet and pray and meditate. His grotto and other Caves made a deep impresion.
We had our tour guide take us to this St. Francis retreat at a time just before it was invaded by large tour groups. Silence is golden and requested on a visit to this sight, and a stroll through the woods. A trip to Assisi to discover the history of the town and St. Francis would not be complete without a visit to this retreat outside of town.
I personally suggest to do a nice walk from Assisi to Eremo delle Carceri, more or less one hour. The landscape is awesome ! You do not need to rush in these kind of experience/visit, you need time. The effort pay the visit to the monastery especially to contemplate the beauty, silence and take the time to reflect and pray.
If you are in Assisi and love St. Francis I would definitely recommend a trip up to this location. This is where Francis would go to "get away". It is up in the mountain about 2 kilometers from the town. We didn't have the energy to walk so we took at taxi from San Francesco Basilica. It wasn't cheap but it was worth it. The taxi waited for us till we were done. It is a very peaceful location and you get a real sense of St. Francis here. There is an altar that you can leave a prayer request and there is a copy of the note that Pope Francis left in October of 2013 when he visited.
A nice walk, you can contemplate silence, beauty, nature. However in order to deeply appreciate this place, a certain kind of "spirituality" is needed. I am way too skeptical for it, I guess...
The town of Assisi is on a hill at the foot of Mount Subasio. We hiked to the top of the mountain to the place that St. Francis and his friars used as their place of solitude and quiet. Visiting the 15th century hermitage built over the caves of the friars and praying on the mountain trails nearby was a wonderful experience. The hike is arduous -- you can also take a taxi to the top and then walk on the relaxing summit trails.
