The key to selecting and enjoying a trip to Paoli is knowing ahead of time what to expect. I've been there with my kids 4 times now and we have a great time there. The bad: - Paoli is a hill, literally. There are no mountains in Paoli, Indiana. It's farmland. Paoli Peaks is a large hill that sits sort of by itself. - The weather is very hit or miss. There's enough of a base to allow you to ski even when temps get up in the 40's or more; but it can get slushy. I've heard of people going and not being able to ski at all; but we've had snow all 4 years that I've gone. We go in late January or early February. - Blowers: They have to make snow when they can. If the blowers are on, it is very loud and you can end up wet sooner when you ski under them. This has only happened on one of four trips for us. - The service is fine; nothing spectacular.- It feels expensive for what it is.The good:+ For us, Paoli is great because it's not too big. It's probably 50 acres total. I am comfortable letting my kids ages 8 to 15 ski without me as long as they stay in pairs. We take walkie talkies and stay in touch. We're never more than 5 minutes apart but they love the independence. + It's a great place for kids to learn to ski. There's a great bunny slope with a ski lift to practice. + It has a great beginner slope (Family Trail) that a new skier can enjoy all day long and it's also one that a parent still enjoys skiing on. + It hasn't been too crowded when we've been there.+ There are good trails (Walnut Alley) for intermediate skiers to enjoy too.Bottom Line: It is what it is. For us, it's a 4.5 hour drive and our kids have a great time. But don't go with visions of Colorado or even North Carolina...it's just not like that. We know it's redneck skiing but we always have fun and plan to go back next year to take the next of our kids in line to learn to ski.
We skied on the Sunday before President's day. I thought it might really busy, but was pleasantly surprised that it was not. The lodge is at the top of the hill and you ski down. Plenty of fun runs, challenging but not extreme. I am not young and I could ski all but the terrain park. My daughter is a new skier and could ski all but the terrain park. The lodge is quite outdated as far as fixtures and décor but functional. Some of the pluses include a bar and a starbucks. The ski shop had a great variety of items. The cafeteria was horrible. It was arranged in a completely inefficient manner. By the time you got your food and paid for it, the food was too cold to eat. This is a serious area of opportunity because it didn't have to be that way.Snow was good, the lifts were good.
Took my son snow tubing and for the price it was AWESOME!! Was a little scary at first but after the first time down absolutely was hooked!! Then you ride a human conveyor belt back up with your tube that is attached with a leash. So much fun !!!! $25 for 3 hours. Good price, good time!!
This isn't Colorado or West Virginia or Vermont skiing. However, if you are a midwestern skier and most of the terrain is flat, this place is just the ticket for a fun, inexpensive day on the slopes. For $70 per person for tickets and rentals on a Sunday, my wife and I took our teenagers and some friends for a day on the slopes. There were no lift lines whatsoever, especially later in the afternoon when the little kiddies cleared out. We literally skied down the hill (in less than a minute), skied right onto the lift, rode up, skied down, and repeated until we were exhausted. The lodge is friendly and inviting, with cafeteria-style food, a ski shop, and a small bar. There is plenty of seating, and the staff is very friendly. The winter of 2013-1014 has been terrible in our area. Paoli is an easy drive from Louisville, Indy, Cincinnati, and Evansville. This is a great spot to get out and have some fun. It doesn't hurt that French Lick Resort is close by - our crew hit the casino buffet after our day on the slopes, which was a perfect ending to one of the few fun winter days we've had.
First of all, this is rated for a midwest ski area, not to compare to a major western or New England ski resort. My son mostly enjoyed the terrain park. There were both challenging and moderate features including rails, knuckles, barrels and others. There are plenty of lifts and he managed to get in quite a few runs. The best part of the place was the people. Universally they were friendly and helpful. My son sheared off his binding after landing a jump. The pro shop was very knowledgeable and were able to remount his bindings in less than an hour while we had lunch. The cafeteria was efficient with typical quick items but they also had some good soups that appeared to be home made. I had a cup of chili and a slice of pizza and a bottled drink. My wife had basically the same. Total bill was $22, pretty good compared to Colorado prices. The rental area was cavernous and they rent just about everything including clothing and gear. The resort was pretty full on Presidents Day weekend and seemed to cater to beginner skiers and boarders. Adjacent to the hill is a tubing area that looked like fun, but we didn't check it out. The lodge is very large and a bit confusing to get around. The bar is also a little small. Viewing of the hill isn't really possible because the lodge is at the top with the runs falling away. In summary, it's a good place to catch a few runs or to practice your park skills. Staff was friendly and prices were reasonable.
Beginner? Intermediate? Advanced? Paoli Peaks is a local answer for the Ski-buff!If you want to learn, keep your skills sharp, or just get-away, get in your car and go!The staff and instructors are friendly and ready to help. Yes the Vertical drop is not huge, Paoli makes the most of it. The beginner trails have varying levels of challenge, the intermediate and advance can chalenge you and give you a workout! For begiiners, I can't think of a nicer place to get going. The instructors are great and there are enough people falling that you won't feel out of place! after the bunny slope there are graduated beginner slopes each one adding a bit more challenge.Advanced skiiers get mogals and some steep slopes.Snowboarders can have lessons, and then hit the trails with rails, moguls and all sorts of challenges. So the runs are quick and usually the liftlines are short! so enjoy 20 or 30 runs!!
Went to PP today and I gotta say that it was a ton of fun. Snow was a little icy in some places but overall todays snow was great! Lots of fresh powder out there and just an overall great time. Pack your lunch because the cafeteria isnt that impressive. Digital lockers were availble and you could use them multiple times for one fee. $4 for a standard, and maybe 6 for a large...very reasonable rates for in/out of them.
As a first time skier, this was a wonderful experience. Check-in and equipment rental were very well organized, and instructors were great, especially "Stan", who was more interested in seeing that students actually learn the basics that rushing them through on a schedule. Every employee was professional, and the facility itself was wonderful. Would recommend to anyone, and will definitely plan a return trip.
We had a wonderful family oriented New Years eve skiing in the New Year! The wife and I skied for a few hours while the kids snowboarded. They had ski movies playing in the lodge by the fireplace, a DJ in the next room that started a conga line, and 20 minutes of on-snow fireworks at midnight.Everybody enjoyed the new year celebration and we will do it again next year!
My family and I have been going here for years. We live about an hours drive away. My Girl Scout troop all learned to ski here, and they had a blast snow tubing. I've never had a bad experience with any of their staff or instructors, they're a pretty cheery and helpful bunch. This is not a ritzy place or anything, but they don't skimp on running the snow-making machines to keep the conditions as good as they can in this climate. I highly recommend it especially to families just learning. The cafeteria food quality is just ok, and a bit pricey, and the lodge could use an update, but I'm happy they are here closeby and reasonably priced, so we can get in a ski fix any snowy weekend!
