A visit to Hayward is a must for all track fans. World famous it is unlike any other track events. The stands are packed with cheering fans and you can feel the atmosphere. Unique in track. If you are here in the summer, there are "all comers" meets where anyone can participate. This gives you a chance to say you "ran" on Hayward field, which is bragging rights for runners. Where Steve Prefontaine ran, and host of the last 2 Olympic Track/Field trials (and hosting #3 for a record in '16). Even if it is not open, drive by and look through the gates.
I have visited Hayward dozens of times (I went to law school across the street) and attended meets big and small at this wonderful home of American track and field. It's so rare to find a track dedicated to track in the US. That is its sole purpose. Beautiful and historic grandstands, one of the finest tracks in the world, fine scenery and all very cozy and accessible. Walk around the track and see for yourself. You will feel like an Olympian. It's a wondeful place. Plus there are college eateries nearby and even the incredible Prince Pucklers ice cream is half a block away. Enjoy!
I have always wanted to see this historic track, so it was a highlight for me. Unfortunately the track itself was completely locked up and under construction when we were there. The infield was consumed with huge tents, so it was hard to see what I wanted.
I was fortunate enough to study at the University of Oregon on study abroad from Australia! This meant I was lucky enough to see Hayward Field every day, and it never lost its pearl. I wish that I could have been there for a track meet, but it was amazing to see it, and even better to walk on it.
This is a great historic venue that has seen some of the greatest athletes on earth preform on its hallowed grounds.I have been going to the Pre Classic for many, many years now and it has always offered an incredible experience for both the fans and the athletes. The access to the world class athletes is unrivaled in any sport. Autzen gets the headlines (and lives up to them) but Hayward holds its own.
The best place to watch track and field in the US. Close to the action and knowledgeable fans. Home to major US and international meets?
I have been attending track meets here for 40+ years. The athletes are world class. The setting is beautiful. The meets are run precisely. The fans are knowledgeable and appreciative. At the USA Olympic Trial several years ago, I sat next to a Los Angles sports fan. At the end of a very exciting race, he said he had attended 100s of sports events and had never heard the fans so loud.
Great place to watch top notch track and field. Not a bad seat in the house. Many food options. Bring a stadium cushion for general admission seating.
Hayward Field is legendary, historic and has to be THE best place to watch and run in a track meet. The fans support great track and that makes it a magical place to run & watch:-) Only thing I would improve: more leg room in stands- small thing compared to the experience.
If you are a runner, you can't miss the chance to take a lap on the very track that Pre graced decades ago. Unforgettable.
