The Chamber of Commerce lady was exceptionally friendly & helpful, but the selection of Yreka souviniers was much too limited.
A real jewel from our gold rush past. Building anre mostly original and show pride of ownership. A nice walking and shopping district with good dining and an atmosphere of a world that once was.
The gold exhibit at the courthouse is gone - mostly stolen in Jan 2012.Small farmers market (weekly, seasonal) is worth a stop. There are a number of vacant shops, but take time to tour the Victorian houses - many are large and well-maintained (others not so much).
Great little shops, especially Hospice Heartesans where the volunteers make rugs, pot holders, aprons, jewelry, Christmas gifts and knick knacks and sell them very cheaply. You get a sense of what life was like more than a hundred years ago.
We walked Miners St admiring the old buildings and the history written on posted plaques. The Victorianhouses in the surrounding neighborhood are awesome. What a great find in this small town!
Well, at least it seems like it. Someone (I suspect a local historical society, not one person) has done yeoman's work in supplying informative plaques for most of the buildings on the street. The merchants have done a great job of making their stores attractive, but it is special to have a sense of the history of the buildings you are entering. Nicely done, Yreka! We happened on downtown Yreka during the tag end of a classic car show and motorcycle show. So the main drag was closed off and made into a pedestrian-only area. That made cruising the street on foot all the easier.
Went to visitor center but woman was busy typing and barely said hello.
Most buildings in this historic district have plaques describing the history of the building. And walking through the district it's easy to get a distinct feel for life when Yreka was a thriving town.
Lots of cute local shops and restaurants. Fun place to walk around, with the added bonus of a park at the top of Miner Street.
Lots of homes for pre-1900's many in great shape others needing a little TLC. While looking at the homes saw a family of deer in a front yard snoozing under a tree
