The sheer size of the museum and the huge number of exhibits make this an Aladdins Cave of artifacts from days gone by and makes you realise how hard working and inventive our predecessors used to be. You'd be hard pressed to see everything in one single visit but there is almost certainly something to interest virtually everybody wherever their interest lies.
What a fantastic museum, free fun and loads to see. Took children and they loved it, including the story telling. The trains are magnificent and just amazing to se and be around. If it's raining it might get very busy. you don't to be a train lover, you'll enjoy it anyway!
We visited some years ago but wanted to go back and it was a bonus seeing the Winston Churchill complete with video. Free entry but a £3 donation is recommended and well worth it. The Mallard Experience looked 'interesting', a 12 seater simulator ride recreating Mallard's record breaking run. Not for those under a certain height, or for people with high blood pressure or who suffer with motion sickness. You do have to pay extra for this Adults £4 and chidren £3. We didn't go on it. A really good morning out.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the NRM in York. Its such a visually stunning museum and houses the worlds most famous locos. Station Hall has the Royal carriages. The Great Hall is superb. I was made very welcome my staff and give a donation. You can take as many photos as you want and the staff are helpful and friendly. The cafe located in the Great Hall is of a very high standard. Allow your family plenty of time to view the museum. Great day out.
This is an amazing place, even if you don't like trains. You'll be captivated by the exhibits that cover the past two centuries from the early mining railways to the golden age of travel, from old advertising posters to royal trains. You'll need three or more hours here to do this museum justice, and the best news of all is its free!Hot tip - if you're coming here by car, do not park in the museum car park which is a rip off. Check out the York Commuter Car Park which is right next door - between the National Railway Museum and York Rail Station. Far cheaper and on weekends even less!
