A fantastic and a 'must' visit place for newcomers to the city. Whats more they even assign someone to guide you -in a totally unbiased way and very well located off the Golden MileGuidebooks and apps are ok but nothing like finding out about the city from the localFunny thing was, the student who helped us actually studied in London's Queen Mary College and was very hospitable when I said I drive past every day!I was well advised about which Jazz and Oyster bar to go to and given comprehensive information in a short space of time well done
The two domes and the mosaics of the entry stairs are among the most beautiful and surprising spaces in the city, just stunning. And Cultural Center programs and great civic resources.
The Cultural Center has some very interesting displays, but it also has amazing architectural features, from the Tiffany glass dome to the Carrara marble used throughout, it is a beautifully constructed building. We were fortunate enough to be on a private tour, so they gave us a glimpse into the building. I believe it to be something that most people completely over look and miss out on.
I dropped in to look around when I just happened to walk by after visiting Cloud Gate. This was a great stop. The architecture inside of this former public library was interesting. The Tiffany dome was beautiful. The exhibit areas had interesting artwork and the free Noon hour concert was a totally unexpected bonus. I thought I'd drop in for a few minutes and stayed for a couple of hours!
Not much culture here on the first floor. People reading magazines, eating, and not much going on at all. I was expecting poetry or music or art or SOMETHING cultural. Maybe someone walking around and saying "da Bears?"Nope, none of that. We stayed for a bit, and then bailed. Boring. With a Capital B.
This is a great place for architecture aficionados. The neo-classic building is absolutely beautiful with not 1 but 2 glass domes (one of which is Tiffany). The detail in the glass and mosaic work in the former library is remarkable. Plus, its free.
Good place to visit early in the trip because there is a Chicago visitors center. Always interesting art shows and often music. Nice hallway full of historic architecture photos. It's also a senior center. Convenient on Michigan and Randolf.
