This is apparently the family home/birthplace of Cervantes, writer of Don Quixote, and they were obviously a wealthy family to have a large (by normal standards) house in what has historically been one of the most important towns in Spain. It has been more or less restored to its original state and it is very interesting to see what the conditions were like in those days.If you are in Alcala, which in itself is well worth a visit - a lovely, historical town only 30mins and a few euros from central Madrid by cercanias local train, then this house is a must see. It is very small and you can see it all in 30mins if you want. If you are interested in books and literature, you will spend more time here, as there are plenty of ancient works on display. Entrance is free, and it is located right in the centre of town. Check the opening times though, they are a bit Spanish...
On a hot august day, this museum shows the wisdom of building houses in Spain with thick walls and small windows. There are about 10 rooms to view all giving very useful insights into a Spanish life during the time of Cervantes. Free entry and a great chance to cool down from the Calle Mayor. Highly recommended
Ancient and interesting, but not the best interpreted museum I've been to. We were in and out in less than an hour. If our Spanish had been better, it might have made a difference.
Very interesting and quite odd in a nice way .Stepping back in time is always odd. Would go again .The courtyard is lovely too.
This is a lovely house turned into a museum. The birthplace of Migeul de Cervantes. We have visited several times, the most recent during the medieval fiesta. The museum is a large house with a courtyard. The rooms are decorated with wonderful period furniture and we especially liked the cabinets decorated with scenes from Don Quixote. It could do with more English translation but other wise problems and as it is free entry for all! there is no excuse for not visiting.Don't miss it!
A nice reconstructed house that gives an idea of how people lived at the time. It´s located where the original house was. Do not expect a big museum, but as part of a visit of the town is a place you should go. Alcalá de Henares is a very nice historical town, worth visiting. The museum is free, another advantage.
Many of the notices/informationwere in English but not everything. But as Free an excellent attraction But a guide book would have been handy. I Do reccommend it though
nice museum, gives you a feel of real life in 16 - 17 century; it was free entrance during our visit (i guess because it was week-end Saturday)
This is not really the Cervante's birth-house. It is a recreation of what it could have been a typical house of that time.It is a 30 minutes visit, more or less. And it will make the delight of the foreing people. Maybe not so remarkable for the spanish.
Very well done, not to be missed. It's right on the Calle Mayor, it's free, and it is a wonderful window on the early life of the adventurer and author.
