This is one of the temples that had totally collapsed. Constructed about 500BC, it is the oldest temple in the valley and also one of the larger temples constructed by the Greeks. Nearby is the former home of Sir Alexander Hardcastle, an English Captain who retired here and organised the re-erection of 8 of the temples columns in 1923.
Give yourself more time just to enjoy landscapestemples are set on the hills, with marvelous outlooksI recommend night views towards the temples from Agrigento (centre). The place is stunning day and night
Most:Alexander Hardcastle lived in the villa just adjoining. Presumably he used his considerable personal wealth to raise up these 8 sensational columns.Least: No more restoration has been achieved since his original work was completed.
It would have been great to see it fully restored with a roof and internal decorations as it did in its heyday. Well preserved and a fantastic photo opportunity. Around it are old olive trees and wild flowers everywhere. The view of Agrigento on the higher hill were superb. Views of the sea and surrounding countryside were also very good. Dont miss it
By itself this Temple would be a tribute to the ancient architects and builders, but within the Valley of the Temples it is just another marvel of antiquity. Don't tell Hercules I said so, but the other temples are a little more impressive.
amazing place to be seen in the region, the monuments beautifuly preseved, place kids, family, couple firendly, great expirence of an ancient history, great place to take amazing pics, beautiful olive garden next to the temple and the interesting modern sculpture of fallen angel next to temple
There are partially restored remains of this temple. There are 8 standing columns that were restored by Sir Alexander Hardcastle, an officer in the British Navy. Despite the partial restoration, it is an impressive structure and fits in well with the Valley as a whole.
Aside from all the blocks and parts of columns strewn around, there's not much left, but the eight upright columns are impressive, especially in late afternoon sunlight with the city of Agrigentol across the way on the hilltop, and the presentation of information in Italian and English is helpful.
don't know why I just loved it. It was a wonderful shape, the other temples are fabulous but this was just something extra special
A good end of the temples to start to save the best preserved ones until later in the tour.Superb views up to the larger remIns
