This castle served important function during medieval times, this is well perceived by the size and impressive location of the castle. a must see, once nearby.
The castle is fantastic - still being restored in parts, but dramatic and well worth a visit. After you have been to the castle make sure you go to the fantastic Castle Church, in Zehra : It is also a UNESCO Heritage Site (like the castle) and has fantastic frescoes. The church is locked, but details of the key holder can be found on the church notice board (her house is just down the road to the left as you face the Church from the Church gate) - The church can be visited during standard day time hours (The castle tourist office staff can ring ahead to make sure they key holder is available, if you ask them to do so).
History of Spis castle begins in the 12th century thanks to Árpád. In 1961 Spis castle was declared to be the National monument . In 1993 Spis Castle and other monuments in the area – for example Holy Spirit church in the village Žehra- were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Roman Catholic St.Spirit church is from 1275.
Well worth the effort to find the entrance and the climb to the top of the central tower. Not to be missed if you are anywhere close. This castle is beautiful, huge, with stunning view if the skies are clear you can see a lot of the surrounding places. the middle tower is my favorite part. The access to the castle is not marked very well. We had to use GPS to get there. But worth visiting. Amazing experience.
Traveling around Slovakia was nice experience, but Spis castle was amazing. Climbing up to the walls and exploring what lies inside was great experience for whole family. Children enjoyed torture room and we actually tested few devices;) After exploring interior accompanied by English Audio guide (full of stories and interesting facts) and taking loads of photos, enjoyed amazing view on a clear sunny day, we walked around the great court and later around the whole castle. For full enjoyment reserve at least 3 hours to explore evrything.
We had been to Spis castle 10 years ago. There have been many improvements since that time. It is much easier to get around the grounds. The walk ways are easier and more developed. It is still a bit of a hike from the parking area, but worth it. The displays have greatly improved and have been expanded. There are many interesting displays from living areas, weapons, cooking, to dungeon and punishment. The history of the area is easy to visualize. I wish the store had more items to choose from, more souvenirs and English books.
The biggest castle in Slovakia and former Czechoslovakia as well. It is huge and amazing and everything... just go there and see yourself:)Nice view from the tower!
The biggest castle in the middle Europe. Really beautiful, very good food in restaurants around amazing country side
We were driving from Kosice to Kraków and decided to go through the mountains just to see this old castle and it was definately worth it. My teenagers loved it even though there was a lot of walking.
