If you're driving by, it is worth stopping to stretch your legs and learn about the history of this centuries old bridge.
Walk across this 500 year old bridge over the raging river below then through the tunnels dug 60 years ago by the Swiss army thru the cliffs above the old road.
From all the guidebooks you'd think it was very impressive - I almost went straight past as its not exactly signposted or obvious from the new road.
We walked here from the Andermatt rail station (about 15 minutes through what is currently a construction site on top of a rail and road tunnel). There's a walking tour around the Teufelsbrücke and the Russian memorial, taking you to all sides for photo opportunities. This place is spectacular and you get a good sense of how important it must have been in medieval times when they finally managed to cross the river here!
The San Gottardo was already an important connecting pass between the North and the South of Europe during the old times.Follow how the Uri people copuld build this bridge and have a drink at the cafe which was a stopping point for the old post carriages (where the horses got changed) and later of the post busses. You can see three bridges of different age from one point.
