I thought there would be more to it, up on a little hilltop, an American flag stands and boom your grave, I thought there would be a little more maybe stating a little on the grave about him. A little disappointed.
Not much of a historical site but a surprise to many locals who dont realize a president is buried in Menands Cemetary. Arthur was VP and succeeded Garfield who died from an assassin's bullet. Arthur was considered to be an undistinguished, corrupt puppet of a dominant political machine but surprised everyone once becoming president when he pushed for civil service reform. Like Andrew Johnson, Gerald Ford and others, he was never elected President in his own right.
This is a very nicely crafted tomb, as tombs go. Look into the cemetary tour given sometime in October ever year. It gives you alot of info on the famous people buried at Albany Rural. Also a few ghost stories! Good time of the year for that!
The Chester Arthur Tomb is centrally located in the Albany Rural Cemetery. It's one of the earliest rural cemeteries, and is quite peaceful and attractive. The Arthur grave? It's a grave. Nice place to lie at repose, but it's somewhat hard to really analyze a grave. For anyone who visits presidential graves, it's a must-stop, and a pleasant one.
I am not a 'cemetery buff' by any means. This is the only cemetery I have gone to where I did not know anyone buried there. It is really a nice and peaceful place. It is perfect for taking a walk and just enjoying the scenery, but it is filled with history beyond that. There are several books written on the people that are buried there. Great history and a great place.
Chester Arthur is buried at the Albany Rural Cemetery in Colonie, New York. The Cemetery is a rather peaceful place where many of the 18th century New York leaders are buried. In addition to President Arthur, you will find the resting place of important politicians, soldiers and innovative builders of New York State. In addition, it is a great place to stroll.
This is a beautiful memorial to a great president my family is buried in this cemetery Albany rural cemetery beautiful place to visit feels peaceful very park like
The Albany Rural Cemetery is a fantastic place to take a walk on a sunny afternoon. There are many paved pathways, and the cemetery allows pets on leashes. There is so much history as the cemetery was planned in 1840 and opened in 1841. It is interesting to learn how they carved and moved some of the massive obeliisks that are throughout the cemetery. It is definitely worth visiting if you are interested in Albany's history.
I was prompted to give a review so I couldn't resist the laugh of sharing that it has been a year since I was last in the cemetery and I'm reasonably certain that it no different then any other of the multiple times I've seen it in my life and would bet it is the same as it looked when it was new and the President was first laid to rest. Don't expect much, it isn't like Kennedy's tomb in Arlington.
Probably the most famous resident of "The Rural". It is not a tomb, it is his sarcophagus. Before visiting, read "These Exalted Acres" by Paul Grondahl (Published by the "Times Union"). President Arthur shares real estate with many, many historic characters from Thurlow Weed to Leland Stanford, founder of Stanford University.
