Quaint and interesting. Volunteer guide was exceptionally helpful and knowledgable . Well worth popping in at taking the time to discover bygone years if you are visiting Bakewell. Steep walk up hill to get to the museum but perfect if you want to walk of that piece of Bakewell tart you have just eaten.
Hidden away in Bakewell is this historic little house which is home to a collection of artefcts, curios and objects relating to the history of the local area. Lots of great things to find out about Bakewell and the house. It is run by a dedicated and knowledgeable set of volunteers. Definitely worth seeking out.
Not enough to fill a day but well worth a morning or afternoon visit. Close to the town centre. Information well presented. Volunteers helpful and friendly
The museum is situated up and incline behind the church but well worth a visit. At £3.50 very affordable to see this very old house with quite a collection of memorabilia, is well worth the effort of the slight incline walk. . Fortunately the museum does not just idtentify itself with the Arkwright connection but focuses on the activities of Bakewell during the centuries. The exhibition also covers the second World War and the original discovery of the Bakewell Tart. There are so many original features within the house also for children there are many features of the museum that they will enjoy.
This is a Museum that Kids will love!It was a slight up-hill walk to locate this little Gem and well worth the hike ... Two lovely women volunteers welcomed us into a House / Museum that had such wonderful atmosphere and the things on show were of a type that I could fully understand unlike many larger museums. It was really great value for money and even though the building is obviously very old the facilities were excellent. An inexpensive way to spend a couple of hours with the family actually learning about the past. If in Bakewell you MUST visit.
What a day,a visit to the old house will take you back in timeThere is so much to see,do and exploreThere is a lovely guidebook and the staff are lovelyI felt like I had experience true social history when I visited hereYou will too
This great little Museum is tucked away behind the Church up the hill out of the town Centre. There's a video story of the House and Town plus loads of little snippets in various rooms, --- a very thought prevoking story in the small WW1 display and the staff can fill you in with some wonderful stories.Spend an Hour or longer here--- this is a great understated little Museum !!
We recently visited the Bakewell Old House Museum. A warm and friendly welcome and then we wandered about the house following the instructions. It was very interesting to see how the house had changed over the years and had kept so many original features. Some of the exhibits were really interesting. A lot of thought and care has gone into the museum and is obviously much loved by the people that work there.
It was tricky finding the place, was set on hill top pass the church, has to ask locals for route as the sign posts were few and far between. A little path eventually leads to it after a ninety degree turn. Do turn around to enjoy spectacular view of the undulating landscape. If you need to get back to your coach park, ensure you keep an eye on your watch as it is a little bit of journey to this site from parking area. The building old and quaint ie. if you like architecture. Museum very interesting if you like history.
We always worry when visiting museums with the kids. We worry that they will get bored and that there will not be enough to keep them entertained. We didn't need to worry with this one! When we got to the museum we were greated by a lovely man who spoke to us like we were friends. He had a chat with the children and gave them worksheets to complete. He told us a bit about the house and the best way to go round and told us to shout if we had any questions. We paid the entry fee which was very reasonable and went into the first room.We started by watching a video about Bakewell and the house and then went round the house which was stuffed full of interesting things. The kids had great fun hunting the rats and the one in the toilet had them giggling. We all loved the house. The covered yard is a really nice touch, we could sit and have a coffee from the machine while the children played with the yard games, before we said goodbye to the lovely members of staff who gave the kids a lolly.Well done for saving this beautiful building from demolition!
