Especially on a clear day, this is a great place to look out on the "Blue Smokey Etc." mountains. HUmidity can make it hard to see far. There is signage so you know what you are looking at as far as states - up to four. It's especially stunning in the fall with the various colors. Also when you are above the fog of the Potomac early in the day. Certainly worth the 10 minute drive from Berkeley Springs.
Worth the 5 minutes drive if you are in Berkeley Springs. If you drive for 5 minutes more you can find a small river access if you have a canoe or kayak.
Huge expanse. lt would be truly spectacular in the summer, during the foliage or after a new snow. None of those were the case when we were there, but the view is really big anyway.
Drove a few miles outside of Berkeley Springs to see the views of Prospect Peak. There is not much there, except for a stunningly beautiful view of the surrounding states, river and valleys. Absolutely gorgeous and breathtaking. Worth the short drive.
Worth the drive to see the view over Prospect Peak. On a clear day you can see MD, WV and PA. It was stunning.
At this overlook just west of Berkeley Springs on Rt. 9, you can see three states. However, the scrub trees haven't been cut back recently blocking some of the view. There is a more spectacular view of 4 states from Cacapon State Park Mountain Overlook. However, the road to Prospect Peak is in better shape than the one at the state park.
We drove up to Prospect Peak on Sunday, January 19. The view was very nice. I've attached a picture. It was a very nice way to enjoy the sunset over the mountains. Yes, there may be more amazing views in the world, but this was a beautiful, peaceful moment on a Sunday evening. What distracted us: the smell of sewage likely from Panorama from the Peak. Panorama from the Peak is a restaurant that is literally across the street from the pull over for Prospect Peak. We assume their septic tank was leaking because the smell from the restaurant was TERRIBLE. We walked a bit away from the restaurant and it was bearable.
This is a really beautiful view, but I'm a sucker for waysides and overlooks. I generally stop any time I see a scenic overlook sign. You need to watch for this one, follow 9 W out of town and curve on up the mountain: the pull over area is directly across from a restaurant. We didn't eat at the restaurant because I'm not interested in Vegan or vegetarian, etc. However, the view is definitely worth the stop.
I drive to a lot of places in eastern/central wv. There are a TON of places that have much better views than this. If you are looking for trult breathtaking views in wv here are a few ideas. Some require a significant drive time but here you go: 1 Spruce Knob (peak) 2. Bear rocks @ Dolly Sods 3. Cacapon State Park overlook 4. Pendleton point/Blackwater Falls/Blackwater Gorge 5. Along highway 55 heading towards moorefield, and then highway 48 past Moorefield. All of these are significantly better than this overlook. But if you are in Berkeley Springs its worth the drive b/c therr isnt a lot to do there...
Prospect Peak is a beautiful overlook just west of Berkeley Springs. If you're lucky enough to be there for sunset, stay long after the sun falls behind the mountains. The uplighting of the clouds is spectacular, and you can see the reflection of the beautiful sky in the river below. Just stunning.
