This is a beautiful scenic park offering various trails to walk and view wild life with a great chance of seeing the famous wild horses. Also the beach here and the ocean views are some of the best in the Ocean City MD area. Have been coming for years off season and enjoy the solitude and ability to get some great exercise walking the trails and along the beach. Great photo taking opportunities all across the park. The visitor center about 2 miles from park entrance is well worth stopping at as well. Admission was $15 per car for a pass good for 1 week
We visited the park on 4 different occasions this past week. They have recently built a new marsh boardwalk that is handicapped accessible. it is 1/2 mi long and well worth your time to enjoy it. We enjoyed seeing the ponies, Whitetailed and Sitka deer as well as swans geese and ducks.
I can't say enough good things about this spot. Even when it's packed in the summer, it's still really fun. They have a store and outdoor showers to rinse off.
You will love Assateague park you will discover thing so bring your camera with you. There a lot of great photo opportunities to take pictures of course there are the wild horses the ocean and nature to There is a charge to get in the park but it worth it so bring the one you love or a friend with you to share the experience of the state park two thumb up.
Used my State Park Pass and came early and put in at the state park with my kayak and kayaked until check in-Beautiful start of the vacation. Supply store nearby.
Assateague is a nice place to visit for a few hours while you are staying in OC md. A great place to camp for a few days. The ponies roam about free. The beach is nice and you can walk to the bay.
I visited Assateague State Park with a group of friends and my boyfriend. All I knew about the park previously was that it was a sister to the more well-known Chincoteague Island. Not surprisingly, I loved this place! We started out in the visitor center, where we got to learn about some of the flora and fauna and history of the island. After that, we hit some of the hiking trails. They were very comfortable and easy for us beginner hikers, and the scenery was beautiful! It was really interesting to see the old highway, and walking on it helped ease a couple of our group who were having trouble walking in the sand for long periods of time. After hiking, we took our picnic lunch on the beach. It was a really beautiful place to visit, definitely something I would do often if I lived closer. My sole complaint was that we only saw two of the famous ponies, both on the drive in. But of course, that's not something that can be controlled, and it was really interesting learning about the ponies and how they help raise funds by auctioning off the right to name new foals! I'd recommend this park to pretty much anyone - it is kid-friendly, great for groups or couples, but would be just as fun solo. Just make sure you bring your camera!
If you want unspoiled beaches, the ability to drive on the beach, and wild horses, this is the place for you. It can get hot in the summer, and buggy, but if the wind is right, it is paradise. There are guarded beaches for those in need, but the real joy is driving your 4 wheel drive to your own spot ($$permit required and limited # allowed on the beach at a times - so go early.) Take a picnic, chairs, fishing poles, sunscreen, drinks, and make a day of it. For those interested, many use this park's bay side to launch their boards for kiting, kayaks, and if the surf is up, at the oceanside you can try that as well. Easter Sunday has sunrise services, and the park service has a list of other events throughout the summer. The visitor center is also great, especially for families. It is a gem.
Very peaceful place to visit. Ocean City is a few miles away for all the entertainment you could want. Frontier Town is just down the road. Plenty todo or not to do. Bike paths are all over the Park.
This is one of our favorite places to go. We are fortunate to live only miles away. I take many pictures there, of not only the beaches, but of the many wild horses and deer that roam the island. The beaches are beautiful and go on for miles. It is nature is it's finest. It has gotten more and more popular because it is getting very crowed in Ocean City. They have made several more parking areas and bathroom, which were needed. Make sure you stop by the Visitor's Center. It was redone and it is lovely for children too. They have a movie about the Island and the horses . If you go in the summer, bring bug spray, as it is all natural. Many people camp there too.
