We brought the entire family and grandparents to the Nevada Southern Railway Excursion. A fun time was had by all. The staff were both knowledgeable and friendly. My youngest got to climb into the "drivers seat" and pose for pictures. A unforgettable memory indeed. Thanks Nevada Southern Railway!!
This is a nice diversion for young and old. They have a short excursion with narrative along the way. Several restored pieces of equipment to view and the history this railway played in building the Hoover dam is worth the short jaunt from Vegas. They operate on weekends and if your nearby or a railway lover membership is reasonable to support this bit of history.
The Museum offers, for a reasonable fee, a very short run down the last remnants of the rail line that brought hundreds of tonnes of material from the main line in Las Vegas to the Boulder (now Hoover) Dam site in the late 1930's. The excursion is usually hauled by a nicely-renovated Union Pacific diesel. The consist is made up of restored passenger cars. The trip is about 3 miles each way, and brief, but for children who have never seen, let alone ridden, a real passenger train, it is an experience to be remembered. For us older folks, who weren't able to get from one place to another except by train back in the "Old Days", it is a fleeting nostalgic moment. And the scenery ain't bad, either.
Taking the train from the Boulder City train station to Railroad pass is a wonderful excursion for families and their children. Kids always seem to enjoy a train ride. It is not too long and you can choose to sit inside or in an open air car.
A must see if you are in Vegas with little ones, it is a historical train ride, great for kids that has not experience the real train ride before and for grown ups too, we loved the experienced , great for family bonding as well...Employees are friendly and amazing how they preserved the old trains ..love it ,love it, love it...will go back there again with other friends.
We found this attraction on tripadvisor so decided to make a stop on our way to Hoover Dam. Plus, my son is really into trains so this seemed to be a perfect fit. We were not disappointed. We were able to walk around some of the locomotives and train cars they have at the station/museum and then were able to take a short train ride to Railroad Pass. They have air conditioned cars as well as some open air cars on the ride (you can walk between them). We did not see the old train boneyard so I don't have any reviews of that. But overall, we had a great time and spent just enough time there for the attention span of a 2 year old.
I rode the Santa Train this past weekend and had a great time watching the kids interact with Santa as we traveled down the tracks from the Boulder City station of the NV Southern RR to Railroad Pass, It was also fun to see, and ride the scale live steam locomotives that are on the same grounds. There was a 1875 steam locomotive running too! Always fun to ride a train!
Went here to visit on an afternoon tour. Wonderful trip for families with younger children. The trip is basically a train ride for a couple of miles and then returns going backward on the same track. This is a small operation, and is working to try to build itself into something more. Cars are air conditioned, and we needed it on the day we were there it was 105 degrees. Was also a nice break on the way to Hoover Dam that day to see the main attraction in this area.
We did the train ride last night with a 18 month old and 3 year old. We bought the dining car experience; cookies, hot chocolate, a story, singing and Santa. They do a really good job; mostly volunteers; I appreciate the high school boys wearing suits and leading Christmas Carols. If I had it to do again I would have gone during the day; my grandkids were a bit young and there was nothing to see outside because it was so dark. Also it was cold. The Museum had a lot of photo ops but again low lighting and cold
We recently moved our business and our home to Las Vegas. The first weekend we could take some time to explore, we visited the Southern Nevada Railroad Museum! What a blast. The people who volunteer their time are wonderful, the trains at the museum are awesome, and the 1.5 - 2.5 scale steamers down below the main rail offer a fantastic ride around their railroad, Highly recommended for all ages. We have subsequently became members of the organization and will be donating our time so we can be a part of the action!
