The mansion is not huge in size but the tour is big on history and the history behind this mansion is very interesting. The ties of the former families that lived there to other parts of our country was fun to learn about. The tour guides are the best I have ever experienced. Our guide spoke well, was easy to hear and was able to answer all questions. The mansion shop, where you bought tickets, was great too. I managed to find a couple of really cool items that I purchased. The only draw back is that there is only street parking. It only took once around the block however, find a great parking space. If you like history or old homes this is for you!
I was very impressed by the quantity and quality of the restoration in this house. I live in a city that is known for historic home and plantation tours and Victoria mansion is quite a value in comparison. It is gorgeous and comes with a fascinating history.
A real version of what was once Victorian Portland. Thought not as magnificent as I what I had hoped because it was under construction, I was not disappointed by the offering. Beautiful art, graceful wood carvings and a glimpse into yesterday.
An acquaintance suggested we visit the mansion for the ultimate Christmas seasonal experience. To me the whole experience missed the mark. The mansion may be exciting to students of engineering and architecture and interior designers, but to me it was no more than an example of excess in the most extreme. If you are fascinated by what people with unimaginable wealth do with their money, this may be the place for you. It is surprisingly small and densely packed for a 'mansion' though.Every room was over-elaborately decorated to the point of claustrophobia. The already crowded rooms were then virtually buried in gaudy and excessive Christmas adornments. Each room was decorated by a different design studio and the results looked like it was a competition to see who could provide the busiest display.Of course, my mood may have been soured a bit by the haughty docent that chastised me for using a penlight to read the guide book in the dimly lit rooms as if I was intentionally trying to fade the furnishings. For me it was a miss as a museum and as a source of Christmas spirit.
Went for the Christmas display while visiting and it was beautiful. Self guided tour- which I prefer, but there were very helpful guides in each room who were able to answer all questions. My fav part were ceilings. So make sure you look up!!! (Ask for the AAA discount when you go in.)
The mansion is quite beautiful and we had the unique opportunity of visiting in December when the Christmas decorations were up. My husband, kids (5 & 8) and I walked around with ours heads up and jaws agape. The docents or "security guards" were a little on the tough side. There's no flash photography or video taking allowed so I have a plethora of grainy cell phone camera photos. Fortunately you don't interact with them much but I could feel their eyes on me and the kids (especially), making sure we didn't touch anything. Overall, a pleasant experience, though.
The cost for the tour is $15 per person. AAA discount or senior discount make it $13.50. This is a interesting self guided tour of a very ornate mansion built in 1858-1860. This is a National Historic Landmark. The first two floors are open,The third floor and tower area is not open to the public. This mansion is being refurbished as funds are available and it is obvious that it takes allot of money to keep it up.
Another nice way to spend a rainy day in Portland. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided insight to Portland and this family owned home before and around the Civil War era. Some beautiful period furnishings and art work and early examples of running hot and cold water, gas lighting and central heating. Nice gift shop.
The tour was a little steep at $15 a person. But seeing the (almost over the top) architecture of this cultural treasure was well worth it.
I went to the Victoria Mansion with my mother while we were staying overnight in Portland, we agreed that visiting this was our favorite part of the trip. The house was amazing, there were so many little details that made you feel transported back in time. It is very fascinating to see all of the hard work that was not only put into building the mansion but also restoring it. During the summer months you can only go on guided tours and you cannot take pictures, which was a little disappointing. Our tour guide had a lot of knowledge of the house. If you are looking for a beautiful visit to a historic house then go to the Victoria Mansion.
