I honestly want to slap and shake every single guide book contributor who said Buzios is a Brazilian Riviera - place for young, beautiful and glamorous. It is a BIG FAT LIE. I bet non of them really went to Buzios, ever. There are no beautiful beaches, glamorous atmosphere, pretty fishing village with cobbled streets, or "young and famous" crowd. NONE of it. Well there were a bit of cobbled streets to be fair. The trip ( from Rio):A long and unpleasant drive from Rio, both ways the traffic is so bad that it took us nearly 4 hours to get there and 4.5 to get back. We suspected something is not right as area just before Buzious looked ruined, rough, dark, covered in graffiti and possibly dangerous. The crowd:The place is indeed full of tourists but either local ones or from neighbouring countries. Mostly they are simple, hardworking families. There are no hipsters dancing to a latest cool music or rich kids sipping Crystal or handsome surfer dudes or dreadlocked yoga loving hippies - making this place a bland overcrowded holiday spot. It is neither here or there.Restaurants and shops:The city centre has market stalls with most forgettable cheap generic jewerly and souvenirs. There are no glamorous designer shops unless you think that Havayana shop counts. Restaurants are serving some strange tasteless generic food in a hurry. The sea platers we ordered in two different places looked as they were made of frozen seafood. The service is slow and unpleasant. The beaches:The "famous" Bardot promenade - in short has nothing to do with what you imagine it might be. Quite the opposite. The first beach we visited was in "unspoilt" category. However in reality it is a far cry from a deserted pristine spot one could imagine but a narrow line of sand with flimsy sunloungers plonked next to each other. Drinks sold by an old lady from a wheeled cart. No toilet while it had a 100+ holidaymakers with motor taxi dropping off more tourists every half an hour. The second one was sandwiched between two hotels and a restaurant and was packed by smoking, sandwich eating, beer drinking families with coolers. Only one small and dark toilet to wash your hands and change. The water although clear was cold and not many were attempting to swim.We runaway back to Rio as soon as we could to its lively atmosphere, amazing landscape, beautiful people, good music and tasty restaurants. Conclusion: avoid Buzios as a plaque!
...you'd have Buzios. It's where Cariocas go to get away for the weekend and if you're leaving Rio you'd better be going someplace pretty spectacular. There are a zillion little beaches spread out around the Rorschach test inkblot shaped archipelago, each with a slightly different vibe. You'll need a guide to navigate the many options so If you don't have local friends to serve as guides carefully choose your hotel/pousada. You can't really go wrong in Buzios yet there are so many hidden ways to go right
Joao Fernandes and Tartaruga (turtle) are quieter, Geriba the most crowded. If you want almost exclusivity, get to the beach before 9 am. If you want to see people, get there after noon.
You can't complain about this place being to packed ... Around this place there's soooo many little treasure beaches around... It's packed because it's beautiful... With always nice people ... Do my gopro vids hear but early... So get up early then go look for a new place which will be close by...
There are so many good beaches to enjoy yourself.Ferradura beach is quieter and the sea is calmer. But for all round enjoyment then Geriba is the one to go to. The waves from the sea are great for all ages and the availability of good food brought to your location makes this a great place to be. We were there over the high season of Christmas and New Year and the whole place was very busy. But there was always room on the beach. But it could be difficult to get a parking space for your car or beach buggy.
Take a day trip to Buzios. Enjoy a boat trip along the beaches or take a walk along the boulevards where Brigitte Bardot once walked. Look for the statues of 3 fishermen standing in the water. Enjoy a ride with a watertaxi back to the port. You can shop and take a drink in the Stone Street. A lot of choice. Beautiful beaches.
The beaches that I have visited so far in Buzios can only be described as very average and disappointing.
