Loved walking on this bridge that is not specifically for walkers, bikers, etc. They have made the area around the bridge enjoyable for all ages with the shops, parks, museums, etc.
Love this bridge. Sexy architecture, wonderful drive, great views. Just plain old food cruising. Take the time to cross!
Great view of the Tennessee River. Walk over to North Chattanooga or drive over if you prefer, across the Market Street Bridge.
While walking around downtown Chattanooga this is a nice walk across the river. We also walked around the north shore on the far side of the bridge. This bridge is a pedestrian only bridge.
We lived in Chattanooga for a few years and always enjoyed taking a walk across the market street bridge. Anytime we had friends or family to visit we'd take them here. The walk is easy and gives you a beautiful view of the river, Coolidge park and the other end which leads to downtown Chatt. There are also benches along the walk in case you want to rest or just sit down and take in the view. Often in the Summer when you made it to the other side they'd have shaved ice vendors and such. Many times walking across the bridge there would be local musicians playing on the bridge that would provide great enjoyment. The Market Street Bridge is a must visit for anyone who is in the Chattanooga area.
The only times that I have been across this bridge were at night during a wine festival held on the bridge when I just happened to be walking through. I somehow managed to do this twice without planning it. All the people and vendors enjoying an evening and the happy noises coming from this old historic bridge made it seem almost like traveling to a different time and place and making you wonder.
We loved walking across the bridge. We even got to listen to a young man playing his guitar with 2 girls singing along with him.
The Market Street Bridge is a great central location for the city. It's safe any time of day or night thanks to the bike-cops. It's a great gateway to down town to the North Shore. So much access to a lot of great places in town.
Be careful not to confuse the Market Street Bridge and the Walnut Street Bridge. These two bridges run parallel. Market Street Bridge does have a large sidewalk for pedestrians, but it is not a pedestrian only bridge. There is no toll or fee for the bridge which connects the shops and restaurants on the north to the aquarium and downtown area on the south. It provides great views, but a safer alternative (especially for families with small children would be the Walnut Street Bridge).
It is a drawbridge that is canter levered by two huge concrete blocks. The bridge is opened on a regular basis for preventive maintenance.
