Yes some crucial, typical zoo animals are missing, but it's still a good time for all ages. Less expensive than other zoos. Worth a visit if you're in the area with your family.
I was at this zoo 11 years ago when my son was 4. Always wanted to get back there I enjoyed it so much. My husband, my 15 year old son and I went this past weekend and it was even better! We took the train around the park when we came in and when we got off the train the path leads you to everything you want to see without getting lost. Everything was very well maintained and the variety of animals was great. Its just a very nice size zoo and reasonably priced. Nice way to spend a few hours.
This is a nice smaller zoo with something for everyone. If you are driving along the Interstate take time to break up a drive. There are many interesting displays for any age.
Friday October 24th .. We decided to do an adventure and our first stop was the Niabi Zoo. What a surprise for some reason the zoo was free this day. This is a small zoo but for it's size it had/has quite a few large animals. My favorite was the large cats and next the giraffes. My husband enjoyed the koi pond where we bought some food to feed the fish and ducks. After that we took the train around the park which I would say is a must. We are so glad that we had this on our to do list.
I've taken my two children - 4 and 6 - to a lot of zoos in the midwest, but none was as good of an all around package for their age than the Niabi Zoo. First, the admission for an adult and two kids was very reasonable ($20, I believe), and the charges for additional activities (Train Ride, Pony Ride, Bird Feeding, etc.) were also only a couple of dollars each. The zoo is large enough to have a wide variety of animals (not just a glorified petting farm like some of the smaller ones), but still small enough to be covered leisurely in a couple of hours, which is really important with younger kids. The only exit being through the gift shop would not have been my first choice, but that helps keep costs down, and I am adept at saying "no", so not a big deal.
We refer to this as "the beginner zoo." It only takes an hour or two to walk through...great for little ones. Since I was little my family has made it a yearly tradition to visit the zoo. It's a little expensive for a small zoo, but it's worth the extra money as they are continuing to update it and bring in new animals. After your zoo visit, eat at Happy Joes and enjoy some mini golf nearby. Great little outing for a family.
We are from out of town and decided to visit the zoo on a Sunday morning. The Zoo itself was alright. Average sized, but there were a lot of animals that were not in their cages or missing all together! One thing that really bothered me is following their directions online got us lost. They have a detour because of construction...the detour doesn't exist! Need to keep up on the online updates if you want to keep customers happy!
We went on a Thursday (July 31st) and it was not crowded at all. Admission is not bad, Adults $8.25, children 3-12 $6.25, Seniors $7.25 and kids 2 and under are free. Parking is free. Takes about 3 hours to go through. Not a real large type of zoo. The Giraffe feeding was kind of a joke....... the line was long and you pay $4.00 for 2 "small" leaves of romaine lettuce and it goes so fast that its hard to even get a picture!! The Australian walkabout is being redone so there are no Wallabies walking around like usual and really the only thing to do in there is to feed the Lorikeets which is $2.00 for a cup of nectar. This is a very neat experience provided you don't mind birds flying and landing all over you! Older kids (11-16) thought this was THE BEST part of the zoo trip! My son had 4 birds on him all at once. There were no monkeys out. Lions were not in their regular area but instead were put in cages in the center of the area. We did not see the zebra nor the ostrich. We did not see the Black and White Colobus Monkey, either. The train ride was fun and only cost $2.00 per person. They do have pony rides for children 85 pounds and under with the cost being $4.00 per child. The food and drinks are about normal for this kind of place. $2.50 for a large bottle of water. Hotdogs $3.50. Burgers $5.50. Gift shop was decent but of course pricey. all in all it was a fun decent trip with cost very minimum for a zoo trip!
Nice zoo to walk around. Not a whole lot of animals but it's still enough to kill a few hours with the kids. Fairly priced to get in.
Those expecting a zoo like you would find in a major metropolitan area would be disappointed with the Niabi Zoo. As a resident of the area who had not been to Niabi for perhaps five years,I was thrilled with what I saw when I took my three year old granddaughter there recently. The grounds were well cared for with attractive planted areas and the animal enclosures were larger and better maintained than I remember. The animals all appeared to be in excellent condition too. My granddaughter loved riding the train, the carousel & the pony in the petting zoo.If you have an opportunity to feed a giraffe,do it! My only criticism is that the food selection,at least where we ate was extremely limited;hotdogs, nachos, candy, etc. I look forward to visiting there again.
