There is really only the old rocks of church and other buildings to see, however your imagination can easily fill in the blanks. The sun was shining when we visited the site and to look over the country side was well worth the drive through the "islands". There are several plaques to tell you about the early days and what once stood here. Well worth the drive!
The location of this monastic site is simply stunning. Beautiful place Views out over Strangford Lough. Very peaceful and a lovely place to see some of the beautiful scenery that Northern Ireland has to offer
Interesting old archaeological site, complete with informative boards. Had the place to ourselves when we visited, so was nice place to kick back and take in Strangford Lough. Small site but worth a visit if you are in the area and can find it!
Nendrum is found at the end of a narrow winding road which hugs the lough shore . Water to one side, lush farmland on the other. The site gas a small car lark, and access is through a gate and up the hill. As you climb the earth works and reach the top. The stone remains lie before you. Nothing but the sound of wind, bird call and your own heart beat will disturb the silence. Sitting on the wall which encircles the site, looking over the lough, imagination can take you to what it may have been like in its hey day. Other than that, sitting and letting the sights and sounds of nature delight your senses is enough to restore your energy and calm the mind.
Been living only a few miles from this place for years but only recently visited. Have been there countless times since. Something very special here. The views are simply amazing.
The old monastic site has a very peaceful feel and there are sign boards describing the mpnastery that used to be there. Pleasant views of some of the inlets of Strangford Lough and also the old tidal mill. Watch out for high tides.
We were recommended this visit and, although tricky to find, it is well worth the effort. It was quite a grey day when we set off, but the low cloud on the journey over the narrow causeways and around the waters edge truly added an air of mystery and atmosphere. The ruins on the site and information boards are very interesting; it's packed with history and science (how did we forget to use tidal energy?) and I found it easy to imagine how the people lived and functioned in this remote location. The small, unobtrusive information centre is educational, both for adults and children.
This is a beautiful place. I live nearby but often go there anyway. I took a friend of mine who was over France last weekend and she loved it. The views over Strangford Lough from Nendrum are stunning and peaceful! This is a little gem found at the end of a windy road, with water on both sides, lots and lots of wee islands, its is absolutely gorgeous!
One of my favourite places to visit when I was growing up, loved our frequent trips here :-). Beautiful location, interesting history
Silence, the traces of the old port only just recognisable, swans beyond the reeds. A view across the Quoile to the cathedral on the hill. Peace.
