This is a beautiful small park to commiserate the only Civil War battle in Indiana. It would be nice if there were a larger area to use for picnics and a bathroom. The bathroom could be as easy as the use of portable toilets.
There is not much at the Battlefield Park but it is one of two battle sites in Northern states during the Civil War along with Gettysburg. I think it is interesting if you can get one of the Corydon historians to give you a description of the events. They can be arranged through the First State Capital in the town of Corydon.
Extremely quick trip to view this site. Area was well cared for but locked this time of the year. If adding this to your trip please include the other historical site and activities to fill your day.
Just south of corydon-- this civil war battle -- the only one on indiana soil , perhaps even northern soil , was between the South's Morgan's Raiders and the home area militia.. Being interested in the Civil War --- we enjoyed seeing it and reading all the info there. That day there was a very knowledgeable host there, too.
The small Indiana town of Corydon was John Hunt Morgan's first stop once he crossed the Ohio River from border state Kentucky. And the opposition he and his cavalry faced just South of town were little more than local militia. But this was the beginning of a long raid through Indiana and Ohio that heightened panic just as Robert E. Lee was on his own trek North. The battlefiled itself is small. There are a couple of markers and a refurbished log cabin on the grounds. This was a minor affair but it is also the only official Civil War battle in Indiana, so it is an important place in state history. Corydon also holds distinction as the first official state capital. No admission, with limited parking.
For state & local history buffs this is great. However, this park is small. I expected it to be a lot bigger and have a picnic area.
Though the park is a pleasant excursion at any time, it is really fun when they are doing a re-enactment of Morgan's Raid and the Battle of Corydon at nearby Hayswood Nature Preserve and on the square in downtown Corydon. Morgan's Confederate cavalry do battle with the local militia and ride into town anbd terrorize locals (in costume.) There's usually also a military ball with costumed participants and a Civil War band (you can dress up and join them too if you want.) I think the event is usually in early July, and is probably on the Harrison County Convention and Visitors Bureau website.
My mom was really looking forward to seeing the battlefield. There wasn't much to see. After we were all done, I realized that a woman was hanging out in the newly constructed cabin that will eventually be a visitor center (I think). I thought she was with this other group. Apparently, she is there to answers questions but how were we to know that since she never welcomed us, etc.
The Battle of Corydon was the only actual Civil War Battle in Indiana. It was on July 9,1863. On that day 450 of the Harrison County Home Guard aimed to delay General John Hunt Morgan's 2,400 Confederates until Union troops arrived. For various reasons this didn't happen. The Battle Park used to be basically a couple of monuments, along with an artifact from the Alice dean steamboat which Morgan's men sank at Brandenburg, KY/Mauckport, IN and a very small cabin in a weedy forlorn spot. This Historic site of John Hunt Morgan's Raid and the battle of Corydon has been improved with a large "new" cabin, and a bigger cleaner area with handicapped access. A nice place for interactive events and teaching children the history. Still no picnic area but this is not that type of park. It is worth a stop and taking time to reflect on that day. It is a nice place to visit while taking a day trip but it isn't a place to travel to specifically for spending a long time.Except in July when Corydon has a reenactment day and a Living History day at the Park. This event would be worth traveling for if you are interested in history. There are many shops and restaurants in Corydon and nearby Hayswood Park does have great hiking trials and several picnic areas and a nice lake.
The Battle park as it is referred to be locals is a small park with several nice commemorative signs and a authentic log cabin. Gives brief info on Morgan's raiders and the battle of Corydon.
