I liked everything. The town is beautiful and the Johannes Vermeer Hotel is a very nice place. The rooms were clean, the people working there were nice and helpful and the breakfast was super.
The east gate of Delft looks like a castle and the surroundings are just as beautiful. Absolutely recommend to check out this picturesque quiet city! :-)
The old Portal was completely restored and is really worth the walk from the Markt. A bit out of the way, but it is like 10 minutes walk.
You can almost see Vermeer sitting on the south bank painting his famous picture. Well, nothing stays the same for 350 years, but it's a very pretty and photogenic location. I noticed several people gathering to take pictures, although it doesn't figure much in any of my guidebooks other than to say it's the only surviving piece of the town's wall. It's an easy stroll from the center of town.
The Oostpoort is the "East Gate" to the central city of Delft. It's along the largest canal, which circles the city. As I was about to cross the bridge to the Oostpoort, an alarm went off, the bridge swiveled and a small boat passed by on the canal. All very charming. The Oostpoort itself is a small stone building with two turrets and an arch. Apparently it is a private residence now, used as a bed and breakfast.
The Oostpoort is the only remaining town gate in Delft. The gate is around 600 years old and is designed using a certain style of Gothic architecture, which stands out from any other structure in Delft. There is also a little bridge near the Oostpoort which somehow makes the gate more interesting. A very photogenic and very historic place.
Oostpoort, or the old city gatehouse, is very cute but that's it, just a sweet little building to look at. I wouldn't do a special trip to visit it but if you're in Delft with some spare time on your hands or it's on the way to something else you'd like to visit it's worth a look at.
Get an impression how the city was surounded by walls to protect its citizens. scenic view over the canal, very often fotographed at weddings due to his beauty.
If you're coming from the Delft train station, Oostport is on the opposite side of it. Good thing Delft is compact, you can easily make the effort to walk there since it's very photogenic and if you pass through the gates, you can imagine merchants and travellers entering the town of Delft during medieval times. Upon entering, just go straight, keep the towers in front of you and follow the path and you'll be in the Markt in no time.
The long walk from our hotel to reach the Oostpoort was worth the trek. The weather was perfect and this sight was striking.
