OK, I was born more than 60 years ago near Dresden (in the riverside town Pirna). So already when I came in my summer holidays from Munich, I had my regular strolls through Dresden with many interesting buildings and museums. One of them the Dresden Municipal Gallery and Art Collection with it marvellous Sistine Madonna with these sweet two angels looking from a cloud. It is true, once you have seen this picture you'll never forget it. But you also should have a look at the nearby Dresden Porcelain Collection of "Meissner Porzellan", with the two crossed sables.Another very interesting place is the "Grüne Gewölbe" and of course the Castle "Zwinger".
Great collection, well-displayed. One of the best such museums we have seen, and we have been to the Louve in Paris and the Tate in London as well as numerous other art museums. Well worth the time. Some of the paintings have been carefully cleaned, and seeing them displayed next to ones that have not been is illuminating.
This appears under a bunch of different names in TA. Basically the collection of museums that forms the Zwinger and beyond is a wonderful place. I was very surprised by the quality of each and every wing. Dresden's museums are wonderful and not to be missed. The Old Masters gallery is great, but don't miss out on the science and clock museum.
Sistine Madonna was definitely a highlight, but there are many other masterpieces, this gallery is definitely worth visiting if you are in Dresden. The ticket also allows you to visit the Dresden Porcelain Collection nearby which I would also recommend.
Although the building and the majestic past have been beautifuly restored, inside the museum I got that nasty DDR feeling, I had when I visited East Germany before the "wende". Were all pictures real? at least many of the were not and virtually all of the were lackered far to much, some even behind glass. I still have that feeling, not to be free, looked at... One has to go in, one has to see it, but I hope that DDR feeling will once disappear
O acervo em si não é grande coisa mas a galeria é linda. A arquitetura mistura moderno com art deco. Tem umas esculturas bem interessantes e uma lojinha cheia de coisas originais. Uma claraboia iluminada completa o cenário.
One of the treasures of rebuilt Dresden, Germany, is the collection of art museums in the former royal palace. Our tour group had only about 2 hours there. Independent travelers might allow a full day. The museum complex was built in the early 18th century by a king who as a young man had visited Louis XIV at Versailles. A walk on the roof shows the similar design. The Old Masters museum is famous for Raphael's Sistine Madonna, but there are a number of other unique works, including one of the children of Charles I of England - all of whom served as king or queen. In the same complex are a museum of porcelain and an engineering museum with early 18th century drafting instruments and a clock automaton of a young bear which beat his drum on the hour. There is something for everyone there.
