First visit to Tower Museum even though have visited the Maiden City hundreds of times. We visited on Wednesday 4th. March and were warmly greeted by friendly, knowledgeable Gentleman in Reception. As Seniors we were given a concession reduction in charges. Our tour lasted about 90 Minutes as we took in all of the Exhibits and the accompanying descriptions and Historic viewpoints. As my Father came from the City and I have visited since childhood a lot of the facts were known to me but there were lots of information completely new.The overall presentation was excellent and well worth a visit.
John the guide was able to give the perspective of someone who's family was tragically affected by the events of Bloody Sunday. The Museum has a fine collection of artefacts all donated by local people. The items on display bring home the true nature of the events of Bloody Sunday. Shocking in places but not to be missed.
I have done quite a bit of reading and watching but the visit to this museum added the needed context. Set aside a half hour to look and listen. Located in the heart of free Ferry among the murals and the everyday life of those who live there.
This small but comprehensive museum is a must on a trip to Derry. Located near the murals, it really is worth planning an hour or two to visit after taking in the murals. If you are at all interested in this sad period of history, make the time to visit.
Our walking tour guide suggested we take this one in. Very sobering, You want to allow time to just look and read various stories.
Those who created this museum should be congratulated for the way they tell the story of what happened on bloody Sunday. The layout of the exhibits and information is excellent and makes for compulsive reading. What happened that day was truly shocking, as was much of what went on in Londonderry during the troubles. Many people suffered; civilians and soldiers, who all deserve justice. Hopefully the wounds of the past can be healed and people can move on without forgetting what happened in the past. We combined this visit with a guided tour of the Bogside and were humbled by the dignity and friendliness shown towards us.
The Free Derry Museum was one of the highlights of my visit to Derry. It gave a fairly unbiased look into Bloody Sunday, by focusing on facts, and explaining the timeline up until recent years. I definitely recommend a visit to have an understand Derry's place during the Troubles, and to see its effect on their modern history.
A must if your in Derry Very interesting look at the troubles in N/Ireland and at times i found it emotional
Clearly this museum needs a bit of a face lift. That said having lived through the events in question but in the eastern part of the province it was very thought provoking. I'd been to Derry many times but this was the first time info the bogside. The lesson for us alla is to ensure that we don't ever allow ourselves to descend into the hell we all came through. Also enjoyed chatting to guy on door. Can't we just even now start stopping trying to hurt each other. Would strongly recommend a visit.
how it depicts the 'Troubles' from the late sixties to the Nineties.Shows the skill of the people who put the exhibitions together.
