The sand was quite muddy looking and very wet. This may have been because of the recent rains and high surfs. The grassy lawn areas were well cared for and pleasant. The beach area was limited. People were having a lot of fun building sand castles when we were there.
This is a great beach that stretches all the way to the beach area around Torrey Pines. It's a beautiful place to watch the sunset in the evening, build sand castles during the day and watch the surfers ride the waves. The only bad thing about it is that it gets crowded during the day so you will have to move further south to an area of the beach that is less busy but then you'll be some distance away from the restaurants.
Yes this is our favorite beach. Our family's favorite for many reasons. For familiarity for ease of parking-we always seem to find one nearby, either walking distance or in the neighborhood especially after 5 or you can pay for a bit and park. This time we found one above the playground. Cute little playground we spent some time w/our youngest there while the older ones hit the beach. We weren't planning a swim time this time knowing its too cold and that we got there when the sun was setting but that was the plan because we think this place has the prettiest sunset ever! We love it here. The sand is not sandy white but more compact but its fun to dig, write and run around on.Great big stretch of sand, well lit as the sun goes down due to the bar and life guard station right there. Another plus of this beach is their restrooms. Totally accessible right about that and very clean. Cleanest beach bathrooms anywhere we've seen. So easy to wash off. Really makes me want to buy a beach front home right here. We love it here and can see ourselves living here lol. Wish we had more time this year but definitely will come back. Totally kite weather, played some football, threw a frisbee and nets set up for sand volleyball-love it here! Secret little gem still because its never too crowded here on a weekday night especially. Naming it our favorite beach in the southern west coast ;)
The beach is excellent here, and dogs are allowed on the grass near the old power plant across from the old train station. There are very nice bathrooms in the power plant for beach goers. Parking is easy with $$ or ATM cards across the street.Shopping is up the street in del mar, and there's a starbucks three blocks away.
Witness the best sunset at Del Mar beach, fido welcome as well. I love the relaxed nature of the locals. The sand is quite a bit blackened with tar but well worth the experience. Watch the locals fight the big waves later in the year and be ready to take awesome pictures.
Clean sandy beaches. Not too rocky in the water. Popular surfing spot. Great for families/friends. No partying or smoking permitted. Stay and check out the sunset!
We recently rode bikes to this beach, and found two unbelievable sandcastles that someone had made right on the beach. One was the Empire State Building, and the other was a castle with windows and a moat! It's a great beach for just walking along for miles! It's beautifully scenic, and there are clean bathrooms and a nice outdoor shower. Bikes are your best bet here, as parking is limited. There is a pay lot but it's quite expensive.
This is a great beach with goes on and on. The walks and trails, both near the water and on the cliffs overlooking the beach are worth going back again and again. And the best thing is to be here for the locals ritual if worshipping a glorious sunset.
Wedged between surf & turf and the California's classic Highway 101, there's plenty in Del Mar to keep the visitor busy. Don't be intimidated by the area's high-end trappings. Stay in a cheaper part of San Diego and day trip into Del Mar for the races, a day at the beach or perhaps some fine dining. Do enjoy a short stroll through the main drag's boutiques, bars and surf shops before arriving directly on the beach at what I consider to be this little town's crown jewel: The Poseidon Restaurant. Excellent food is served directly on the beach in a stunning environment centered around a huge circular fire pit. Good times, easily had :-)
Though it was too cold to swim, we enjoyed walking the beach and dabbling our toes in the waves. The beach wasn't crowded since it was midweek but there still was plenty of activity and lots of surfers to watch. It's a nice area that was clean, safe and inviting.
