Our family has a mild obsession with all things related to the Great Lakes. We loved our stop here! The museum has a fair amount to see and it was a great introduction to our time in Duluth.
It's all about location and this musuem has the best location for ship viewing expecially when it's cold and windy. You can hear the horns blow, hear the radio communication between ships and the lift bridge and view all the exhibits in the museum.
I loved this museum. We spent some time walking through it, then went outside to watch a couple ships come through the canal. Then we went back inside and, strange as it sounds, I feel in love with shipping. We didn't have time to watch all the videos in their entirety, which I'm sad about. But we did look at the models and displays. I would visit again in a heartbeat.
Stopped in with my wife on a warmer November afternoon. The museum is expertly put together featuring endless amounts of information about the harbor and admission is free. Parking is also free in the winter months, so there isn't anything negative about it. Great location to take in the visitors center and then continue to the sights of Canal Park and the lakewalk.
Glad we took the time to enjoy! The museum displays are informative and interesting. I particularly liked the old photos, artifacts and history of the lake.
I love seeing the old photographs of the start of the shipping business in Duluth and the beginnings of the town itself. This museum has so many artifacts of ship wrecks and shipping memorabilia. It is so informative. I love the location right on Lake Superior, next to the famous Aerial Bridge.
Kids loved this place, especially all of the hands on things to do. They really enjoyed the boat exhibit and spent a lot of time pretending they were the captain of the ship. Plus, it was free!
The Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center has a lot of cool artifacts from Great Lakes ships. There is even a ship pilothouse inside! There is plenty of information about the ship traffic under the Aerial Lift Bridge available as well.
So glad we stopped in on our visit to Canal park! If you love the big ships and lighthouses this is a must see!!
Many, many visits over the years and so easy to access, never too busy even in crunch tourists and always informative and interesting.I seem to find new little facts and tidbits each time, and when in Duluth this is always a must stop.
