Totally worth to see it. If we have a car, we would stay there for half day and come back at night to view the star. Too bad the shuttle only give us 30 mins.
How amazing is it! We were lucky can view the lake clearly. Please go to Level 3 Observatory Desk if you want to view the whole lake and nice scenery! The parking was free here. For level 1 car park we also enjoyed the free parking because we already paid ¥410 at Lousan, the sulphur mountain. There are many local foods, hand craft and souvenirs selling at Level 1 observatory desk.
You can have a nice view from the lake by going here. The only problem is that you cannot go down, so you just have a view from the top. The parking is 410 yen at one spot, and free at the other one, but you should do both.
Although less famous than Lake Akan, Lake Mashu is definitely the most stunning of the 3 lakes of the Akan National Park. Whilst Lake Akan offers lakeside resorts and restaurants, Lake Mashu has maintained its exclusiveness and tranquility. We made our first attempt to see the lake by going along the western route (the more popular route). Too bad it was super foggy and visibility was like 20 feet. We continued our journey to Shiretoko. But coming back, we tried the eastern route and got to the eastern lookout. It was a beautiful day and we got to see the lake perfectly. When the lake appeared in front of us, we felt like the clock and the world had stopped. We looked at the lake for 5 minutes and it did not move a bit. The lake reflected everything in perfect symmetry which shocked us. It was as if the lake had not changed its look for 100 million years.Tip 1: if you cannot see the lake with first attempt, try coming back another day if your itinerary permits.Tip 2: Alternative eastern lookout has a lower altitude and slightly less likely to be foggy.Tip 3: The eastern route allows you to visit another beautiful attraction - "The pond of God's son".
Was lucky that the skies were clear on my visit, and there wasn't any fog that obstructed my view of the lake. The lake was still and not frozen (I wonder why, as it was very windy on my visit), and the surroundings were very serene. A picture perfect moment with the beautiful lake and clear blue skies, surrounded by thick blankets of snow. We only went to the first observatory, and stayed for around 1 hour at the area. There is a well-stocked souvenir shop at the observatory, and we had the Hokkaido-acclaimed soft cream ice-cream in winter!
The viewing decks (1&3) are on the rim of caldera, looking down to the lake far below. Deck 1 is more popular with shops, toilets etc but paid carpark ¥410. It is lower than deck 3 and therefore has a better chance to miss the fog. When we were there, deck 3 was shrouded in thick fog/frost and the lake could not be seen. But deck 3 was a quiet place (free parking) and a winter wonderland in summer. There was no road down to the lake, at least from our driving attempt.
This is probably the most beautiful lake I have ever seen. Its mysterious, with mist clinging onto its steep sides. You cant get to it but it can be viewed from 2 observatories. I can only imagine what it looks like when the sun shines Simply stunning
The first time we drove up to the lake it was cloudy :( We tried again another day when the weather was more promising and voila we were rewarded with a beautiful view of the lake. The security guy at the ticketing booth recognised us from the day before and allowed us in without having to pay again! The still blue water surrounded by snowcapped mountain made a zen like calming beauty. Truly a beauty! Visitors must try to see the lake from the different vantage points accessible to better and fully appreciate its beauty. But be prepared for strong cold winds if you visit in colder months like we did in Oct.
We completed the walk from the 1st (I think) observation area, where all the souvenir shops & cafes are with a big car park. The walk is linear to the top of the next crater and back. The views are spectacular and the last part of the climb quite strenuous. We did it on a sunny day in shorts and t-shirt which proved to be a big mistake - the horseflies bit us to death! There is an interesting video of how the lake was formed in the info centre.
