The drive into the area where Rock Eagle is found is very scenic - especially early on a Saturday morning when no one else is around. There is a rock walkway leading to the massive rock tower, From the tower you can look down and see the Rock Eagle Mound. However, the rock walkway is not "walker-friendly" for anyone unsteady on his feet or having to use a cane, walker or wheelchair. Also, the tower stairs are steep and there is no elevator. It is a beautiful site, though, if you are able to climb to the top of the tower.
We went to the Rock Eagle 4-H center for a 4-H program. While there we stopped at the Rock Eagle Mound. The kids enjoyed seeing it, and getting to the top of the tower.
Great place to stretch your legs out of a long car ride! Easily located off Hwy 441 with good signage.
This is a great place to visit for free. It's very interesting and pretty amazing. Can't appreciate it without climbing the tower, so not for the elderly or disabled. The effigy is located inside the 4-H park/camp. This is a beautiful park with a private lake and trails, a museum, Sunday buffet, picnic areas/pavilion etc. Located in Eatonton on Hwy 441 about 12 miles south of I-20.
very fascinating place for fans of ancient culture/history. Great mystery surrounds this effigy. Very well maintained. Nice info signs on property, Just stunning to see from above. well worth the stop. Free! admission!
We traveled here to see some Native American history and were not disappointed. The backdrop of the CCC building was great.
Rock Eagle is run by the State 4-H. Went there as a kid and loved it...the indian mound is amazing. Well worth the trip
This is a fun, quick visit for anyone interested in history or ancient cultures; while the site itself is well laid-out, has good parking, and is easy to get to, there's not much in the way of explanatory information or background. There's a large informational sign at the parking lot entrance to the site, but aside from that, there's not much to explain what you're seeing.Still, regardless of the lack of signage and information, this is well worth visiting. The observational tower is in good condition, and gives a great view of the mound. You can't get much better for a free site!
If you are travelling near Eatonton, Georgia, (including Macon, which isn't that far away from Eatonton) make certain to go see this interesting site. The eagle, made up of smokey quartz by ancient peoples unknown, is protected by a high fence. To see it properly, one must climb to the top of the wooden tower at one end of the eagle outside the fence. As others have said here, it is easy to find. If you use a GPS, stop using it once you turn onto the 4H road and follow the signs. Mine tried to take us to who-knows-where. By the way, the tower has been there for years. Obviously someone maintains it, though.
This site is really well laid out and easy to find. It is self-directed with markers and a tower so you can see it from above. It is amazing that something so old is so well preserved.
