Despite the 50+ minute drive down Hole-in-the-Rock road, the trip to Peekaboo gulch was really amazing. I love walking down the slickrock trail to get there, the steps up into the slot canyon, and taking my time to crawl, stretch, and slither through the canyon. This canyon definitely sparked a craving to seek out more slot canyons in the future.
This is a fantastic place, there are really no words great enough to describe how awesome it is. Will require a fair amount of physical exertion, so it is not for everyone.
easy to find. fun to go through. Exciting and different from anything I 've seen. Create photo opps but the light is tricky.
We drove the 26 mile dirt road to get to Peekaboo Gulch. We had kids ages 8,9,10. We all enjoyed hiking through the slot canyons so much that we ended up doing it two days in a row. What a neat experience!
Peekaboo Gulch is a short, beautiful and extremely interesting slot canyon, a modest hike from a trailhead that is 27.7 miles down the graded dirt road called Hole-in-the-Rock Road. The hike from the trailhead down to Peekaboo is fairly easy, and you can have great fun exploring the main wash and Peekaboo, or make a loop with Peekaboo Canyon and nearby Spooky Canyon. Just be careful never to go down Hole-in-the-Rock Road or enter any slot canyon if rain is threatened!
If you have never explored a slot canyon before, this is a treat! Narrow passages that are fun to squeeze through and photograph well (hey, it could pass for the famous & expensive Antelope Canyon), arches and fins and potholes, all look great. But you have to be rather athletic to make the whole trip (or have somebody there to spot you). There are several deep potholes with walls being very smooth slickrock, so it's hard to climb out of and a drop to jump into (depending on which direction you are going.) The good thing is that it is rather popular with the locals, so if you go on a Saturday and need help, you don't have to wait for more than half an hour for somebody to pass by. Also I went in late Oct when the potholes were all dry; but several people passing by mentioned that earlier in the year the potholes were filled with muddy water, which I could see from the watermark. In that case I don't know how you can make through without totally drenching your hiking shoes, and maybe even your shorts.Another thing is the drive to this destination. You have to drive 26 miles of unpaved dirt road (Hole-in-the-Rock Road). Imagine driving on the rumble strip for the whole 26 miles, except the grooves are several times deeper & wider - yes, bone jarring. This is the reason that although my kid liked it, I wouldn't be looking forward to any return trips. Fun to do it once, but only once.
Difficult to get started. But it was fun. Getting there could be tricky. Better have an ATV or high clearance vehicle. Spooky slot canyon was also very fun and do-able.
We loved this slot canyon. It was a little tricky getting up into it, but we had some help from 3 Hungarians who happened to be there at the same time. We all helped each other into the canyon and had so much fun hiking through it! Not for claustrophobic people! Bring water shoes for the beginning since there is a big puddle that you have to go through to get up into the canyon. Also, do not go if there are any clouds in the sky!
we spent the whole day going around peekaboo.its a must visit if you are in the area. great fun will be back someday .brilliant.
Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Slot Canyons were my favorite hikes in this area with Spooky being my favorite slot canyon. Although we went early as the temps were expected to be in the mid to high 80s, it was still a little uncomfortable climbing back up in the heat.
