Called the most beautiful street in Granada by many, a stroll along the river between the rising white-washed houses to the north and the looming Alhambra to the south is an experience not to be missed.
Lovely but I think the guide book overdid it. We did have an excellent lunch sitting by the river (down to a trickle even in October). It was great to walk in the shadow of the Alhambra.
Love these sort of streets with views but also intimate with some great eateries along the route, however it spoilt by the seemingly hundreds of buses that go up and down it forcing you into doorways. Yes I know locals need to get to their homes, etc but can't they go another way please. Nice view of the river and great at night as well.
The Carrera del Darro is situated just 5-10 minutes from the city center and easy to find. It is very nice walk here in the evening and just look the river, houses and eat/drink something in a restaurant along the way. You also have some turist shops and in the end you will see Alhambra from below. After the walk continue to Albayzin.
We were fortunate to stay on this charming street which follows the Darro river(was more a stream in early September). Along this street are a many beautiful buildings, views up to the Alhambra, few tapas bars, shops as well as a larger square with restaurants. Quite busy but narrow thoroughfare with mainly foot traffics plus the tourist train and smaller C buses. Very picturesque.
Carrera del Darro is a magnificent place to walk, Being a narrow road, but it was packed with people and tourist bus going uphill to view the famous Alhambra from across a narrow valley. It took me 80 minutes to walk the bus route to the top of the hill, Personally I preferred to walk rather taking the bus, because I could take pictures along the route and stopped at any spot I wanted.
The old bridges over the river and an old neighborhood forms the identity of the street. I took this on a rather cold sunny January day and then halfway through the street I decided to make it towards Mirador de sant Nicolas. And I got lost in the old Islamic Albayzin with long never ending irregular streets. Don't make the same mistake by trying to combine visiting Carrera del Darro and Mirador de sant Nicolas.
From Plaza Nueva (at the bottom of the road leading up to the Alhambra) the Carrera leads you alongside the river to the 'river bars' area where you can relax with drinks and tapas, looking up at the Alhambra Palace. An easy walk with interesting sights en route - Arabian baths, old convent, a church, small shops with more unusual wares than the souvenir shops etc. Look for information posts en route, showing where there are gateways and old access points to the Alhambra. On the left, explore the narrow routes into the Albaicin area.If you walk past the river bars you will find, on the right, a track across the river that leads up a back route to the Alhambra Palace - steep in parts, but a worth while trip, look out for water features on the way - rewarded with a bar at the top!
The granada guide says its one of the most beautiful streets in the world !It's certainly a beautiful street with a real buzz about it.A hive of activity from morning to night with plenty of interesting street entertainment & nice restaurants.Definitely a street to wander around while in granada.
Our hotel was just off the Darro so we 'walked the walk' every day. Pleasant enough street with a few little shops. Walk down from the church at the Plaza Neuva, along the front until it opens out with a few restaurants at the front with Alhambra views. We ate at one: food wasn't great but the service and view was! Only disadvantage is that you have to keep stepping in to let taxis by (we always tried to 'step into' a shop much to the annoyance of my other half!).
