In my previous visit I was unable to view the Delicate Arch from Wolfe Ranch trail instead had to settle down with Delicate Arch upper viewpoint. This time I made sure I did visit it from Wolfe Ranch trail and it was simply amazing. One can spend hours gazing towards it, with mountains in the background. There is plenty of space to sit and relax.
You are probably looking at this listing because you know exactly what Delicate Arch is - it's one of the most famous land formations in Utah, and it adorns our license plates. Hopefully, you already realize that this is not a super easy jaunt, since you're taking the time to do some research. Be prepared for hiking along thin trailways with steep dropoffs, and for some dropoffs up at the top where the Arch actually is. This is something I feel nobody adequately prepares people for, and as someone who is not in love with heights, I feel like everyone should know about it!Take plenty of water - the hike is a 1.5 mile roundtrip, but you will be doing a good bit of work for that 1.5 mile and you will be in full sun 90% of the time.Be prepared for enormous crowds. Your best bet is to get to the trailhead close to dawn, which means leaving town really early, because it's a bit of a drive. The first time I hiked this trail, I was there at 5am and my friend and I were the only people there. The second time, we arrived around 8am, and there were perhaps 10-15 people there, but even as we descended around 9, the parking lot was full and there were droves of people passing us on their way up. If you are looking for solitude, this is not your hike. But if you want to see that one Arch that Utah puts on their signage all the time, well, this is it.
This arch is almost surreal in its isolation. Delicate Arch sets alone on a slick rock hillside and seems so out of place. There are three different ways to view the arch. A 1.5 mile (3 mile round trip) hike out to the arch itself, a .5 mile (1 mile round trip) hike to an observation point, or a short walk to a more distant observation point. Both hikes are all uphill and quite steep.
The hike can be a bit much when you are not sure what to expect in front of you but once you make it around the big rock and see this view you know the hike was worth it all. It can be a bit nerve racking walking around a small ledge but just slow down and let the fast movers pass you.
This is a hike that will get your help your cardiovascular system. So take plent of water and wear excellent hiking shoes. You will be walking up and down some pretty rough terrain. So be prepared. The effort is well worth it. To see Delicate Arch up close and personal is not something you will soon forget.
I was a little unsure of how long and how fit I needed to be to tackle the hike to Delicate Arch.As long as you are well prepared and don't rush it is about 75 mins to the arch and 45 mins back down.Believe me it is well worth the effort ... I spent an hour at the arch having lunch and just taking in the awe of its splendour. Please go and enjoy one of natures wonders !
This is a short hike and an icon for Utah. If you are anywhere near you have to take this little hike and see something that is so amazing and so beautiful with your own eyes.
