I've been here several times and love it each time! I took off a half day of work on a Tues and picked up my niece and came to City island (her 1st time). It happened to be an afternoon when temps hit 90° so unfortunately the batting cages were closed until 5 pm because of the heat. So I showed her around the island then took the short trip across the bridge into Harrisburg. It's less than a mile walk to Strawberry Square where we hung out and had an early dinner at Tropical Smoothie (always one of my favs). Next we sat along the river in the shade and it was just beautiful. We got back to the island in time for the batting cages to open so she could get some practice in. At this time cars were starting to arrive for the Senators game. Because we were already there and parked before the parking attendants came, they told me I wouldn't have to pay for parking!!! The lingering thunderstorm held off for us to enjoy a great Senators game! My niece even got a ball from the 3rd baseman and a t-shirt from the mascot! An overall fantastic day!
miniature golf & fresh dipped ice cream-strolling along the paths-sometimes have included along with a bike ride along the river
The mini railroad is great, if you ignore the run-down condition of the train station. The carousel is fun, if you ignore it's run-down condition. The pavilion is large and good for events, if you ignore it's run-down condition and the fact that many of the doors on the building are broken and no longer operable. The mini golf course looks fun. There's a fun, little playground, and the Sea Breezes food stand is cute and has good food at reasonable prices. The batting cages look good. The arcade is fun.Overall, the island has a lot of fun options. But the run-down, dilapidated condition of so much of the island really is a downer, and has a depressing impact on any attempt to have fun there, if you're not prepared to overlook those things. Keep your expectations WAY low if you plan to visit, and be prepared to ignore a lot of blight and rot, and you will be pleasantly surprised by City Island.Harrisburg is suffering financially, and the condition of things on this island makes that plain and clear.
I love taking walks with my dogs here in the mid-morning weekend hours. There's a lot to do out there...golf, some food, baseball, water activites. Its a really nice place.
City Island is home of the Harrisburg Senators which is affiliated with the Washington Nationals. We went to see them for the 4th of July. The park was really amazing, I could tell there are lots of things to do there besides watch baseball. There is train that goes around the whole park. I would like to go back sometime to see all of it. The baseball stadium was pretty cool though.
When Baseball Season arrives..........City Island is the place to go to see a nice ball game with the Harrisburg Senators. You will see a ball game which doesn't cost you an arm and leg to get into. Concession food is reasonably price for a family outing. Forget the major leagues where you have to take out a loan for a family admission to say the least. On City Island there is also miniature golf and a miniature train that goes around the island. Great for kids and adults to have some family fun-time.
There are so many things to do on this island, particularly go to a Senators baseball game. Love it there, and this past year there was this awesome Indian/Native American festival on the island which was the absolute coolest event I've ever attended there!
Ok it is seasonal for the most part but when in Harrisburg during warm months I wouldn't miss it. It is really the place to be during festivals that occur here several times a year. You can get something to eat while enjoying the scenic river views. You can catch a ball game when the Senators are in town....a double A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Miniature golf, soccer, boating, fishing or just walking are a couple of things to do on the island.
Great family park with free parking. In the evening, you can stroll along, look at flowers, take the choo cho ride, loook at the river and harrisburg skyline, Very pleasant to look at lots of families enjoying the fresh air.
Nice area, lots of family people doing the same. There's a few little things that will keep young children happy like a little train.
