This cathedral is seriously stunning! Located right near the port, it would be hard to miss it! I just so happened to stumble across it before I went off to Suomenlinna and I'm very glad I stopped by. You can go inside as well, and what's inside is even more impressive. I'm not religious myself, however it's hard not to appreciate the attention to detail both in and outside of the cathedral. You don't need to be here for long, so it's a great place to visit on the way to a main activity.
We visited the Uspenski Cathedral on day one of our visit to Helsinki, clearly visible from many parts of Helsinki our first visit was on a Sunday at the end of one of the mass. Inside the cathedral is well preserved and is clearly constantly being maintained. If you know nothing about orthodox christianity then this is a good place to start - steeped in history and tradition it is well worth a visit. No photos from inside on this occasion as we felt awkward about doing that while the mass was still in progress
I like the style of the church.Inside it looks different as expected, it's very clean and white, not many gold figures and all that stuff. But find out yourself :)
This is a fine solidly built edifice. We also sat through a service, with soothing singing, candles and incense. Not to be missed.
This church is very imposing and near the port. Intense and ornate decoration. Certainly worth a visit - unlikely to spend much more than 30 minutes though. Check opening times before visiting. Tram number 4 (or 4T) goes to church from Helsinki town centre.
The building is very picturesque perched on top of a rocky hill and makes for nice photos with snow on the rocks. The inside is not as elaborate as I expected but nice and peaceful.
Visit at Easter time and see the orthodox celebration! Then the church is full of lilys and their perfume is very strong. Afterwards, choose the famous Russian restaurent nearby or walk to old Kauppahalli through at the traditoinal market square. You may have a cup of coffee in a tent and a donat or "lihapiirakka", finnish meatpie at the fish market. Nice view from top of the small hill.
