There were many options for us to view the cranes, but we chose this one for several reasons: this was not a fenced in sanctuary where you can see cranes just at feeding times, and it's not that far from the Marsh Observatory on the same bus route, so if we wanted to add another destination we could. To get here, take the number 20 bus from Kushiro's bus terminal (beside the Kushiro JR station). It takes about 50 minutes and the view is rather beautiful and if you keep yours eyes peeled, you can catch glimpses of deer and fox. When we arrived around 10 am there was a gaggle of swans, but no cranes, so since there are no touristy activities to do in the area (which is a nice break) we hiked around the countryside for about an hour. When we returned to the site the cranes started to arrive! Between 11 am and the time that we had lunch at the nearby cafe (go to the second floor and watch the fields as you have a nice meal) the field was swarming with cranes. The cranes would look for food, dance and sing with lots of comings and goings!
Just want to share the GPS coordinates for Tsuruimidai to make it easier for folks planning to visit:Tsuruimidai (Feeding Station)43°10'37.6"N 144°19'13.6"E43.177125, 144.320451
Tsurumidai (鶴見台) is located at countryside of Kushiro city and approximate 1 hour bus to go. There is a non-government feeding field next to Tsurui village and an old grandma operate the field with over hundred Japanese Cranes. There is a good place to watch cranes outside the zoo. You can see natural crane's activity include walk, dance, fight and fly with your telescope. I highly recommended to someone like natural, bird watching and bird photography. But don't miss to bring your own telescope and telephoto lenses (300-500mm) equipped SLR camera if you want to take picture to cranes. Finally, according to the rules there, don't go the field inside or cross the wooden balustrade to prevent affect cranes. For the transportation, take Akan Bus bound for Tsurui from Kushiro Bus Terminal (next to Kushiro JR Station) to Tsurumidai Bus Stop, bus fees 970yen. Addition, there have a souvenir shop and restaurant are located the opposite side of the field.
