What a surprisingly beautiful part of Huntsville. We simply drove up and down at random and saw gorgeous historical homes, some decorated for the holidays. Worth the drive.
My wife and I spent about an hour and a half on the self-guided walking tour. It was a beautiful morning and although the temp was in the 80's a nice breeze kept us comfortable. If you like history and/or beautiful, historic homes, this is a must do. The Huntsville welcome center will give you a CD for a narrated driving tour but park your car and walk. Do the driving tour too, or if you're unable to walk, but walk if at all possible. You won't regret it.
Picked up a brochure at the Visitor Center and parked downtown. I managed to see most houses on the tour, and walk a little over 5 miles. It's very interesting to read the history involved in several of the homes. Twickenham is a very beautiful area to take a stroll through, very clean, felt safe walking alone and made for good exercise.
Absolutely stunning homes, especially the old antebellum houses. Loved seeing the architecture and the landscaping. The magnolia trees were in full bloom. Wish I would have had more time.
I can only imagine what this district looked like in it's heyday! It is beautiful and the architecture represented is fabulous! The district is small enough to walk around but you can also drive. You are not able to go into most homes or in the property but you can admire from the road. All houses have plaques with the original builders named and date it was built.
The houses are very well kept up and my husband really liked looking at the architecture. The houses have little signs in front of them so you can easily identify which houses are on the tour.
The houses in Twickenham are amazing beautiful. The history behind this part of Huntsville dates back to the civil war era. I did a historical walk around the block and was so thankful I took the time to learn about Huntsville in this manner. So worth the effort to see.
We live in this neighborhood and we've taken the tour with our friends visiting from out-of-town. Whether on a bus or walking through on your own it's just lovely. The antebellum homes are stunning. Lots of fun little shops in the downtown area, which are in easy walking distance. We are so lucky to live here and welcome everyone who wants to visit.
I used my GPS and enjoyed a nice driving tour of the dead end streets and many varieties of mansions and upper middle class homes. Great place to raise a family and very safe!
There is a "ghost tour" of Twickenham and I wish we could have gone on it so we could have learned more about the history of the homes in this area. They are beautifully restored and each home has a sign in front that says who was the original owner and the year the home was built. Even my teen daughter was fascinated.
