This attraction is a bit confusing due to the reviews. It seems there are multiple trails being described in these reviews. ( all of which are probably awesome ).My fiance and I did a nice short hike called the Squaw Trail. This is located IN Kanab. The trail head is right behind the baseball fields in Jacob Hamblin Park. It is an established trail, so you will see a sign for it in the gravel lot and probably people walking their dogs on it(caution poop). It travels back into a small canyon type area, and then works its way up to the top. It does provide some nice views of Kanab. This trail is nice because you do not need much time to do it. Even if you have an hour of daylight left it is worth it.
Kanab is a totally unique little town. You gotta love it. It's definitely in the "Rock Stars" Club (meaning it sits shoulder to shoulder with many of the best geologic sites), is known as the Little Hollywood of the West, and annually offers more nifty unique festivals and events like Amazing Earthfest, Western Legends etc. It is also home to some really really neat trails...a number being known only to locals altho' a morning expresso at Willow Canyon will usually gain you a willing local who will take you to a life sized rock art panel etc. The Trailhead is one of these neat gems, leads you into a lovely hiking region that changes with the weather so is constantly fascinating. Recommended.
This is a great trail easily accessible from a trailhead on the east side of town. You climb past large rocks overlooking the city and curve north to the top of a minor peak. Great views, moderate difficulty. Have good shoes/boots.
Great local hiking! Easy to find and marked trail. This isn't appropriate for beginners, but great fun for an in town hike with excellent views.
This was recommended to me by a motel clerk. It was a little steeper then what I was expecting with some steep dropoffs on the trail. Not even close to scary as Angels landing thou. I was told it gets you up to the TV towers overlooking the city. The trail disappeared in the sand hills above the cliffs and I didn't want to get lost up there as it was getting close to getting dark. I would recommend if you want to get some excercise and get a view overlooking the little town of Kanab. Lot's of Redrock cliffs as you zig zag up swithbacks to the top of the 400 feet or so first cliff and then up to the top of the Mesa.
Paid $6 per adult. Walked easy trail 1.5 mile to canyon. The slot canyon is spectacular. I have never seen anything like it. I understand why they say not to go if there is any chance of rain. You would be in extreme danger if a flood came through. In November the weather was perfect. It was a beautiful blue sky against amazing red rocks. It is a photographers dream.
Beautiful scenery and great exercise. A good bang for your buck. Highly recommend this trail. Takes a couple of hours round trip.
And to be honest, I am not sure which of them this is referring to, but if you are visiting our area, be sure to stop at the BLM or talk to a local. There are hikes that are free, hikes of all skill levels, hikes to slot canyons or along rivers or to the top of our surrounding landmarks, there are hikes in town and pretty far afield. The Kanab Trails Network is pretty extensive, but it doesn't seem to really appear in any guidebook I've ever seen, so there are tons of hidden gems, no matter what sort of hike you're looking to do. I highly recommend just stopping by our Bureau of Land Management office, located just south of town, near the fire hall, and asking them for suggestions. If they are closed when you're visiting, just ask around - not everyone here hikes, but a lot of us do, and even those who don't can probably point you in the direction of several options!
During a 2 weeks tour of Utah & Arizona we spent 3 nights at Cathy's lovely and charming cottage in Kanab. We had the privilege to discover Slot Canyon with Cathy right after a flash flooding and it was amazing! First the drive there is breathtaking and Cathy is a very safe driver!!! And the Canyon is amazing, and quiet!! We were the only one there (unlike Antilope's canyon which we visited later on and which was packed!!!!) and Cathy knows the Canyon in and out, and spend time to show you all the changes that occurred following various floodings. It was one of the highlight of our trip and highly recommend both her cottage and the Slot canyon tour!! And to top it all Cathy is awesome! we'll definitely go back!
